Two blogs in one day? it's almost like I'm active or something.
Anyways, in a half-hearted effort to show some activity on this site and conquer the dark void that is every day life show that I'm still alive, I'm going to blog every once in awhile about trends I notice on the site, or things that bother me, or whatever.
Good? Good.
So I made a blog earlier today asking 'why'. Why do 'edgy spike' fics exist?
I ask this because not only are they bad because of how edgy they are, but they just don't realistically make any sense. I mean I see many comments around the site complaining about how Spike is left behind for every grandiose adventure the Mane Six go on, but...there's kind of a reason for that.
See, Spike is a baby dragon. He is still growing up, and learning things about being a mature adult. This is why Twilight has him do chores, one because she needs the help around the library/crystal castle thing because she's got her head shoved in her books most of the time and forgets to do things like that, and two to teach him responsibility. Though he has proven that he can be a great asset in times of need, realistically he is still considered equal to the cutie mark crusaders, both in his status as a side character and in him being a 'sibling' to one of the mane six. Yet I don't see people complaining when RD, AJ, or Rarity goes off to save Equestria without their sisters. Seeing as how similar these characters are, shouldn't they also have edgy revenge stories written about them? They get left behind all the time! At least Spike got to go with them to the crystal empire!
And because I know someone's going to bring it up, yes I am aware of all the 'abuse' spike goes through. He gets doors slammed into him, he falls off of ladders, he falls into cold lakes, but see...this thing about that is that MLP: FiM is a cartoon. I don't see anyone complaining when Wile E. Coyote falls to his probably-death off of a cliff onto the ground far-far below. Or hell, all those times Tom from Tom & Jerry actually died? If we're going to complain about how abused an animated character is, then I'm using other animated characters as examples, damnit!
The point is, painting Spike as this edgy, abused unfortunate soul just isn't the way to go about things. He's happy with the way he is, he's even said as much himself. He's not out for revenge against ponies, or unhappy about his situation, he's glad to be Twilight's assistant. I can understand some Spike fans out there maybe being upset that their favorite character doesn't get the spotlight nearly as often as he should, but fuck! Look at the season 3 premiere, or the most recent one! This is the best example I can think of, Spike had the opportunity to become something more than what he was. Lord of the Dragons, the king of anentire kingdom of massive, fire-breathing lizards, and what did he choose to do? He gave it up to go right back to what he was doing. I don't know where these people are getting fuel for their 'abused Spike' fics when he is so happy with where he is, why not write a fic about him trying to fit in amongst the ponies instead of forming his own little band of friends and go off to do edgy edgeventures in edgestria on the planet of edgeis.
And I know the answer, because the latter is probably more interesting. But it just doesn't do the character any justice.
Basically, if your story involves Spike doing edgy things in the name of edgy mcedgerson for no other reason than instant gratification, think twice before you hit that submit button, as you'll likely earn my dislike and my ire.
and you don't want to see me when I'm ire.

Ire-ish TGM is too brutal for young, innocent ponies' eyes.
Whenever this happens, I get reminded of the atrocity that is "Ash was betrayed by his friends" Pokemon fanfics, which basically paint everyone but him as a huge asshole, and he always comes back dressed differently, with some deeper voice and just obliterates everyone.
It's dumb, and requires absolutely no creativity.
So are you saying that you're ired of edgy Spike?

On another note I knew this Spike thing was bad but has it been getting worse nowadays? I mean, really.
Judging by the burning towns that you leave in your wake, I think I do. They occasionally have fireworks hidden somewhere and it's amazing when they go off. Such pretty colors.
Just as long as that ire isn't directed me.

Basically, let the edgy kid's post their silly spikeXcolumbine clopfics, and their emo-dragon garbáge, because without these foolish hunks of crap, we wouldn't have any guidelines for what NOT to do in a spike fic.
