They went about this by presenting a wider community prospect alongside other benefits for smaller channels that joined. Although in their video they made it explicit that they would be monetizing these subsidiary brands and taking a 60% cut of their profits. They also said that channels that met certain criteria and weren't part of their community would face being deleted due to copyrights they planned to put in place.

The long and short is they were trying to get even more money than they already earn and copyright an abstract idea which they didn't invent to destroy competition or objection to their channel.
