Author's Notes for Sonata Dusk Eats A Burrito · 8:44am Nov 28th, 2015
Hi all. I wasn't really anticipating writing a dedicated blogpost for this story, but there are a few things I want to say about it that either wouldn't fit or would be out of place in the afterword.
This was a difficult story to write. I didn't think it would be, but a dumb character really is harder to write than a smart character, and I worry I didn't make Sonata dumb or ditzy enough. The toughest part was figuring out how to get Sonata from behind the restaurant to Sunset's table. The next-toughest part was keeping Sonata sympathetic even as she stole Sunset's food without remorse; I'm not sure I succeeded, but I tried. In Sonata's defense, she has no idea Sunset is nearly as down-on-her-luck as she herself is. Dramatic Irony!
The idea that Sonata learned about right and wrong through a puppet show (possibly Sesame Street) takes its inspiration from the excellent anthology fic "The Dazzlings Are Insane".
Sonata is not a ruminative character. I could get away with it with Sunset because of her intelligence and post-EQG1 tendency to doubt herself (and, at least as I write her, because of her significant mental issues). With Sonata, I had to take a different tack; she had to speak aloud because I couldn't make her inner monologue interesting aside from a couple of ditz moments.
You might also note that Sunset is a vegetarian while Sonata is not. That's intentional; my headcanon is that Sirens are naturally omnivores.
As always, thank you so much for reading my story. To paraphrase R.F.Outcault: "I wrote this story just for you, and it's the best that I could do."
I loved the stories, and I'm friendshipping Sunset and Sonata like crazy right now.
