DotO Lore (part 2)

- Big Island, and Charon’s Stop

The main tourist attraction for the Marewaii Islands, many visitors came to see the active vocations. In war time this didn’t change, but the Big Island also became the main port for the equestrian navy. Far enough away from the main population centers, and enough space to conduct wargames, the Big Island all but completely dropped its tourism in favor of the military.

As the solder population grew, towns were built for their family’s to live, which later were turned into experimental cities. The cities themselves were mostly empty, aside from the few residential zones, the rest of the cities were used for wargames and training.

The Big Island was also the main place for the solders to get their R&R, as attraction were built up for them and their families. Residents of the other islands would also visit the attractions, by either boat, or riding the newly constructed metro rails. The biggest of the attractions was Future Park, a theme park boasting the glorious future that equestrian will have beyond the war.

When the war came to its end, many of the big Island residence found themselves trap. The radiation covered the land thickly, and seeped through parts of the tunnels, poisoning everything. Pockets of survivors survived for a time, but only those who made it the Trans Island Station, the biggest station on the big island, lived long enough to rebuild their lives.

Solaris Inc. took control of the T.I.S., reorganizing the refugees into work groups, and reinforcing the station. They managed to maintain control for nearly a hundred years after the war, retaking some of the metro lost to the radiation, and setting up settlements further in. Solaris Inc. met its end at the hooves of Orthrus, formally known as Stable-Tec, after trade negotiations broke down. What started as a feud from the old world, turned into surmises, with became a war. In the war it was revealed that Solaris Inc. had been losing its settlements to a booming wildlife that proved hostile to ponies, increasing the stress on Solaris Inc. ability to maintain control. The final nail in Solaris Inc. coffin was when the populace found out that its leader was schizophrenic right before a major battle over the T.I.S. most of the ponies surrendered to Orthrus, and the rest were killed in battle.

Orthrus now in control of the T.I.S. maintained it’s hooves off approach, allowing the local population to govern themselves. The population would later rename the T.I.S. to Charon’s Stop, as refugees came in from the other settlements, only to die later from poison, or of starvation. In a the years following, Charon’s Stop became the only safe place on the Big Island, though safe pockets existed, safe travel between then did not. Even ghoul settlements vanished in time, they finding their own dangers hidden in the shadows.

Orthrus used Charon’s Stop as a launch point for expeditions into parts of the Big Island not explored. Their efforts proved to be fruitful for the years after, and bringing in wealth of tech though lost. Even after the tech stopped coming in, Orthrus maintained their post at Charon’s Stop, keeping the dangers of the big island out, and away from the rest of the Islands.

Charon’s Stop never recovered from their war with Orthrus, but in time the residence did forget their hatred, and simply saw Orthrus as another part of the station. Though Charon’s Stop dose have a semblance of governance, a mayor and other public officials, it is in truth run by a crime syndicate. At odds with Orthrus, they avoid attracting attention, and stick to the shadows. The closes thing to a public face is their brokers, trading in information, and directing mercenaries, they maintain order by controlling the chaos. Their influence reaches throughout the metro, funded by the black market, and corrupt officials.

Modern Charon’s Stop is still the last refuge for the poor all over the metro. If one cannot get back up on their hooves in Charon’s Stop, then one might as well lay down and die.

I have to say this idea is very unique, I like the whole idea of being trap underground and forming a society is a really good concept.

3466245 thanks. as of current, I'm exploring the civilization side of the story, with each island having it's own culture and style. I draw my influences from many places, With Metro 2033, and Bio shock being big ones.

I don't know why I like this paragraph so much, I just do. It just sums up the place excellently. With some tweaking, it's not far off the stuff they put on some of the Magic The Gathering cards in terms of flavour.

I've been really busy for ages now, so I haven't read any more of your stuff yet. But I will!
