Kingdoms, Empires, Schools, are all ruled by one governing athority. Kings and Queens are a symbol of this governing athority. If Queen Celestia wants to be called Princess that's fine. But it doesn't negate the fact that she is the high ruler of the land. Which in a monarchy would be Queen or even Empress. Celestia should be Empress, Luna and Cadence should be queens, and Twilight should be princess.

more so celestia does not seek to rule like that. when all power is isolated, corruption follow, arrogance too. more than likely the titles you used exist in equestria. however the titles of princess in equestria is used not solely as a status symbol, or a term of importance, but a term of responsibility. and responsiblities are often function better when shared

I have long viewed the term Princess (in relation to the show) as Professor. A title of someone of great learning.

My headcannon, durring the Unification of the three pony tribes the diffrent tribes struggled to revamp the rulership structure. The Democratic earth ponies refused to be ruled by a king or a Queen. The Unicorn nobles refused to a a dress their ruler as a Military rank, and the Spartan Pegasi refused to a a dress their ruler as a Civilian title. But no pony objected to Princess.

-edit- That's why some towns are governed by a Mayor while others are governed by a Sheriff, or even the primary Business owner of the town. Equestria is a Meritocracy but it's titles are ment to reflect their role rather than social rank. Since no role above Princess is allowed, Celestia has the responsibilities and duties of a Queen but can't hold the title.

So... Faust wanted Luna to be Princess just after her banishment or even before? Because if she was Princess even before Nightmare Moon under Queen Cellybeans, then that means Faust wanted Luna to be even more of a throne robber, a line cutter so to speak. And it really puts Luna's and Celestia's equality into question...

In the show, Cadance does hold the rank of Empress of the Crystal Empire.

Which really throws the balance of power off with Celestia.

I don't recall them ever addressing her as Empress Cadence. But even if she is it still works with my headcannon, when Sombra took power he ceded from Equestria, the Crystal Kingdom changed its name and government. They addressed their leader as Emperor and such. But when the Crystal Empire was brought back to Equestria it became a principality. They probably kept Emperor as the title for the CE govenor purely for naming estetics.

They introduce Cadance as the Empress of the Crystal Empire.

Which makes sense. Empires have Emperors or Empresses.
