    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

The Abbreviated Adventures of Braeburn and Troubleshoes · 5:43am Jul 15th, 2015

Disclaimer: The following was written as a (successful) attempt to punch writer's block in the face and get a stuck story moving. It is incomplete and does not represent the direction that story is currently taking. Yet it could be the start of something interesting, and it is presented in the spirit of free horsewords for all.

One’s a bumbling clown. The other is Troubleshoes. Together, they fight crime cause property damage!

Troubleshoes stamped at the ground with unease as he watched the train screech to a halt in the station. He raised a forehoof again and checked that it still held his ticket, and that its destination was still Salt Lick City.

A stiff jab bounced off his shoulder. “Would’ja cut that out?” came a friendly voice. Troubleshoes turned his massive head and tried not to look too annoyed with the smiling, yellow-furred, orange-maned stallion who was standing closer than he’d like.

“Just my luck, having to go back there again,” Troubleshoes lamented.

Braeburn’s grin was infectious, like some kind of rash. “Now don’t you worry none, big feller. This is gonna be a quick in-and-out number. You leave the station, walk to the courthouse, say your peace, and walk right back. Ain’t nothin’ to it.”

Troubleshoes’ head drooped. “That’s assuming ol’ Tanglewire don’t manage to put me six hooves under first.”

Braeburn beamed as he adjusted the tarnished metal star pinned to his vest. “Well, that’s where I come in! You got the best protection this side of Celestia’s royal guards, big fella!”

“You’ll forgive my rudeness if I ain’t comforted by havin’ the sheriff's newest deputy watchin’ my back.”

Braeburn’s face strove mightily to find new venues to accommodate a bigger smile. “Don’t tell me that ya heed all them horse-apples what the townsfolk say about ol’ Braeburn. I’m reliable!”

Troubleshoes sighed. He tried to concentrate on the ponies that began to emerge from the long line of train cars. “I don’t reckon what folk say is any of my business, one way or the other.”

Again, what's coming down the pipe won't involve these characters. (It will, however, involve Discord. Anyone want to pre-read some Discord? I get the impression that a few of you like Discord.) But these two might have potential together, in a buddy-cop-movie sort of way...

Now this could be interesting for sure!

I would totally read a buddy-cop story based on these two.
