Something I realized... · 10:39am Jun 8th, 2015
Okay, so I recently just realized a common factor in pretty much all the good fanfics, and a lot of bad ones...
ANGST!!!
Yes, angst. It seems that in pretty much every story, the main character is unsure of themselves or something along those lines, and falls into some form of depression over it, where it affects their actions and causes drama. Some fics apply angst in light amounts just to give it some edge, others pile angst on top of angst and disregard the obvious limits that angst should be limited by. If you have read anything in the SilverVerse by David Silver, you would understand what I mean by Angst on top of Angst (Although he seems to pull it off, which is incredibly rare in fics that pile angst up to your eyebrows).
But yeah...
AAAAAAAAAANNNGGSTTT!!!!!!!!!

You know what people that never doubt their path in life is called?
Zealots.
Unless the plot is saving Equestria's puppy supply from the dark dragon Mean McEvil using the power of interpretive dancing to spread good vibes, a bit of doubt and hesitation is a good thing. It shows that the character/s actually care about what state they are pushing the world towards, instead of just doing everything they do because they think it's amusing or something.
I will however agree that angst for angst sake is unbelievably annoying pseudo-maturity that really shouldn't happen as often as it does.
3131606 it's kinda funny though, I usually have at least one one small existential dilemma every month. Not always a major one, but me questioning what I am doing with my life and being unable to decide what I want to accomplish. But then again, a lot of it is just because of the sheer lack of meaningful contact with other people. And then there are all these weird paternal urges I have been getting for the last two months...
Emotional baggage is the best kind, if you like ANGST!!! as much as some people do.

There are even different flavours of angst.
Existential angst, for example. Internalisation angst. Societal angst. Sexual angst.
And we, as human beings, can relate to this, because we all suffer from this condition.
3131651 You have to say it like this: ANGST!!!, otherwise it isn't quite the same...
...but yes, humanity causes it's own angst, and we have a butt-load of it.

3131606 3131651 I think I found the tropes that pertain to this: Deus Angst Machina, and Wangst.

Thanks for the compliment! Balance is tricky.
3179976 It was more of just a mention of your skills at piling up ANGST!!! well passed the point where most people would have given up, and making it somehow not terrible...
Actually, I think that might be a compliment after all...

3180165 There is a difference between bad events and actual angst, note.
3180477 And you had a lot of both.
