For those who didn't know, A Dinky Little Problem developed out of an idle thought about shipping Derpy with Troubleshoes.
Clearly I missed that target by a fair margin.
Nevertheless, I feel like I could write a few more stories about Derpy, her family, and her future happiness. But that would mean writing sequels, which have a mixed reputation in general. And it would likely mean putting a bit less emphasis on Derpy's financial struggles than in A Dinky Little Problem.
I want to be respectful of those struggles, in part because I've received feedback that people can relate to them. But I feel like A Dinky Little Problem finds Derpy at a low point, and that the connections she starts to form amid that low point could help to set her on a happier path. ("Happier" doesn't mean "saccharine"; I don't envision Derpy as having an easy life, nor would I seek to change that. And any gains she makes are more likely to be friendship-related than money-related. But friendship can count for something when the rest isn't going your way.)
I think those stories could walk the line between humor, seriousness, and (potentially) romance. The real question on my mind is: Would you want to come along for that ride, or would you rather see A Dinky Little Problem left as a one-shot?
Come along, baby!
