[New Article] Rash of story thefts abound; ebook site found to have stolen stories and fanfics alike · 4:51pm Apr 14th, 2015

Hey there, guys. Maybe some of you have already heard this from some, but considering the nature of the occurrence, we figured that we might as well do our part to spread the word around as well, however little it might help.

If you haven't read up on this matter now, and since I have your attention here anyway, I might as well direct you straight to these tumblr posts, which explain things pretty well on one side of things. There's also these blogs on Fimfic that you can check out too, if you want some details a little closer to home. Long and short of it, some new ebook site had bots snatch up stories from Archive of Our Own and the Pony Fiction Vault -- dunno if they've taken stories from Fimfic, too -- and host it on their site as part of their "free" content. Which you need an account to see. Registering for one which, as it happens, requires a credit card, though with the promise that you get "five days free" of viewing or something.

Yeah. Totally not a scam, there. Be sure to check if you've been ganked or not, though it seems limited to AO3 and PFV from what I can tell, so you might be alright if your stuff isn't on either site. Though, I've heard that someone's stuff from the Writeoff Association's site was taken as well, so, that's another place you might want to check for.

In decidedly lighter news, have you all heard last episode's amazing revelation, yet? This is canon now.

I guess I should consider myself lucky that none of my stories are good enough for theft like this. :rainbowlaugh:

If they're not taking anything from fimfiction, then I'll be well and good.

Nothing too new, really. I've found copies of my fanfics being hosted on no less than five different pirate book sites, all "available" for "free" download. Same with my legitimately published books (though those are on far more sites, and one even was claiming that my books were "free medical texts" to try a circumvent the law). Any time one of them vanishes, a new one pops up to take its place because there's a serious demand.

Do I condone it? No, I'd much rather that people grabbed my fanfics through official channels and actually paid for the books I've published, but trying to reason with a criminal mentality doesn't work that well. I feel for these guys, but it's part of the challenge of writing and being an author these days. Some people would rather steal than pay ... even for something that is free to begin with, apparently.

2983351 actually they seem to have stolen work from chatoyance https://archive.today/WBRLs

2984645 And fimfiction is the only site he/she ever posted that story on?

2984679 As far as I know
