Banned from what?

From the site, silly.

What do you mean when you say, roleplaying?

2887901 Wait, what? I see role-playing all the time. What do you mean it;s banned?

except if no ones enforcing it no one will listen why should we care if no one cares enough to respect the rule. so

no point bitchin about the role playing it's literally a moot point and was last year when you bitched about it then :P

Except the moderators are still enforcing it and have been since knighty declared it has been banned, lol. Roleplaying warnings/bans on users comes up quite often in the staff chat. Keep roleplaying off the site.

2888583 I enforce it all the time, m9. I dunno what you're talking about. If people are doing it and nothing's being done about it, you should file a report. I can't be everywhere, but when it is brought to my attention I absolutely do enforce it.

2887934 RP is, like, assuming the role of a fictional character and then commenting/emoting as that character would. So, like, you and your friend get together and one of you pretends to be Rainbow Dash while the other one pretends to be Twilight, and you act out a scenario where you each provide your character's half of the conversation.

2888628 But, why is it banned? That makes no sense. It doesn't hurt, hinder, or even affect anyone other than those interacting with the RPers. Honestly, this is the first I've even heard of this rule.

2888628 Why would that be banned?

2888930 It actually does affect the rest of the site. Or, well, it did when it was allowed. When you had tons of people repeatedly refreshing long RP threads over and over again to stay up to date, the whole site bogged down and became unusable. It was horrible. If you remember back a year or so ago when we used to get 502 errors almost every day, when the whole site stopped working and became nearly inaccessible for hours at a time, that was why. A few dozen people on a site of thousands were managing to grind the thing to a halt with their antics. This site's comment system wasn't designed to support fast-paced chat-style RP. It doesn't do well with people treating it that way, and keeping the site usable for everyone is a vastly greater priority for us than catering two a few dozen people who can very easily take their hobby off-site.

It just so happens that pretty much every alternative that's available to you is objectively better for RPers than fimfic in almost every way. Even Skype is vastly superior. This ban makes life easier for literally 100% of Fimfiction users. The regular users get a usable site that's not bogged down by RP-induced 502s every day, and stubborn RPers too entrenched in their ways to consider alternatives get forced to do so... and inevitably discover a world full of websites that are just plain better to use for that purpose.

Organizing RP sessions is fine on this site. The sessions themselves need to take place elsewhere.

2888939 The fact that they're RPing doesn't hurt the site, it's the overload of comments. Debate threads, among other types, can do the same thing. Ban RP threads and sessions, but let people comment on stories in whatever persona they want.

2889010 If it's one or two comments in a weird persona or emoting or something, that's probably fine. Dedicated roleplay is banned and will remain banned. Anyone who goes too far with it gets a warning before any bans happen.

2889018 Okay, that makes a lot more sense.

2889018 Mind if I ask why?

3277468 Our comment system isn't designed to handle it. Roleplay threads are typically regularly viewed by a small group of people and can run into the thousands of comments. When you get 6 people on a thread with that much data all aggressively mashing REFRESH REFRESH REFRESH so they don't miss the latest two-word comment, it creates really bad site lag that affects everyone.

Also our system is literally about as bad as you could possibly ask for when it comes to ease of use for the RPers. Tons of other sites exist with comment systems designed for fast, short commenting. Skype, even. Anything's better than trying to do it here with a system that's laid out for slow-paced, longer commenting.

3277524 Most RP's on this site usually ends up like a "Spur of the moment" thing. But oh well, I have an account on Whitetailwoods for this one thing either way.
