So, my PC is kinda-sorta dead... · 11:57pm Feb 28th, 2015
As the title suggests, my baby is...dead but not quite? I can't get any display to show up; HDMI doesn't work, DVI doesn't work, hell VGA didn't even work, but the board is starting up and posting just fine. So I don't know what's up. Going to troubleshoot it today or tomorrow [probably tomorrow] and replace whatever needs [the MoBo most likely] to be replaced.
In any case, it'll probably be a solid week or two [most likely two] until I can get this sorted out [hopefully no longer than that] and have my computer running again, so there MAY be delays in new chapters.
As stands, I have 2 chapters done and ready for publishing, but after that...yeah. Anyways, I've rambled long enough; if you made it this far, good on you, if not then meh.

If anybody out there is particularly tech-minded or has seen this problem before, help me out?
The GPU works [plugged it into my roommates board], the CPU-fan kicks on just fine, the green MoBo light comes on and the RAM light comes on.
So far I'm pretty certain it's PSU or Motherboard; the MoBo was bought refurbished, but the computer always powers up for about 5-8 seconds then restarts, then runs fine after that [which is why I mildly suspect PSU] but I'm thinking failing board.
Specs minus the motherboard listed there; switched to an ASUS P8Z77-V LK [Refurbished from Newegg] when the board listed was DOA.
NOOOOOOOO THIS CAN'T BE!!
2838780 Will have Skype downloaded on my temp here soon mate.
Not that bad then XD
Right, computer scientists here. Hardware specialist at a computer repair shop.
First thing's first, do you have a graphics card? If so be sure you are plugging into the correct port in the correct chip. (I have had SO MANY clients bring a PC into my shop to 'fix' and the problem is they jacked into the motherboard slot, not the graphics card.)
If that docent work, a cable could be loose. Open everything up and unplug and replug all the cables. While you are there remove dust using qtips.
If that docent work, unplug the various cards attached to the motherboard (NOT THE CPU!) clean the contacts with a qtip and rubbing alcohol, allow everything to dry, put her back together and hit go.
If that doesn't work, a piece of hardware may actually be broken. Apply percussive maintenance first, just in case that works.

I do have a GPU, though I am positive it's in the right port. The PC worked fine until I took my CPU out to help troubleshoot a friends computer but when I put the CPU back in, I started having the issues. At first, I thought it was a bad connection so I redid everything and had no progress. After a few restarts, it started working and I assumed it was a bad connector. After a restart like...2 weeks later, it started again and since then [been a day or two now] I've not been able to do much for it.
I tested my GPU in my roommates computer [worked fine, minus telling me to plug the VGAs into the PSU 'cept his PSU didn't support it] and I'll probably try his PSU later to see if it's my PSU that's the problem.
After the PSU, I think I'll resort to percussive maintenance and vodka.
2838824 Did you put the CPU back in correctly? It fits many different ways but will only work in one orientation. Furthermore you should reapply thermal paste tot he CPU if you also removed the cooling unit from it.
2838829 Yeah, it went back in fine and the thermal paste was applied fine; it had minor issues after I put it back in but started working after a few restarts [I assumed a bad pin somewhere that I fixed when reseating everything], then during a restart stopped working again.
2838830 Did you accidentally dislodge a jumper pin on the motherboard?
2838856 Mm, I actually didn't think to check the jumpers; will do that when next I open it up. With any luck, that's all it will be. If not well...I'll be broker come payday.
2838876 My SO's computer had the same issue as your once when i had accidentally put a jumper on incorrectly. But then again diagnosing why a PC wont start is a lot like diagnosing what variety of cancer someone has.
2838905 It really is. A near endless list of possibilities as to what can cause it. You know, now that I think about I'm not getting a posting beep [don't think this board ever actually did that in hindsight] in addition to everything else. Also, checked the jumpers; they're all in the right spot, as far as I can tell. :(
oh dear sounds like the motherboard :(

Looked like it had good specs too
Good luck!
2838929 Humm... PCU issues are the most likely cause then. Try (if you can) hooking in any alternate cables from your PCU to the MB. A line may have gone bad.
2838969 Talked to another couple of people about it and now my CPU is a suspect as well. I hate my life and regret ever taking up computer-building as a hobby lol.
