Fanfic Spotlight #17 · 11:06am Dec 28th, 2014
Happy Holidays to everyone, and welcome back. This week, some feel good stories. Pinkie and Cheese Sandwich cut a rug, EQG style; Lyra tries the Running of the Leaves as a biped; and A.K. Yearling lets Ahuizotl co-author the next Daring Do!

Dripping with cheesy goodness, this one-shot Equestria Girls universe ship fic is swirling with cotton candy fluff. If one is craving a short, light, sweet little tale about Cheese Sandwich and Pinkie Pie planning and then attending a high school dance, look no further.
Summer has a knack for writing in the character’s voices, and certain bits of character within the story are enough to not only keep a reader’s attention in this tried and true formula, but put a smile on their face all the way through.
While perhaps in need of some more in the way of showing, this fic is still a delicious morsel that is certain to have the shippers in fits of squeeing.

It was 2011. The Fandom was still new with images of friendship and world domination dancing in our heads. Season 2 had just started airing a few months earlier and memes that are now old and dead, some the first in the fandom, were still new. One of these memes, though still not dead yet, was bipedal Lyra, a spin off of how awkward Lyra sat in the show.
The Running of Lyra was one of the earlier stories exploring Lyra's weird obsession with being humanish but doesn't stray from show cannon. In it we find Lyra working on walking, then running, on her hind-legs with the goal of running for the duration of the Running of the Leaves festival. While the technical quality isn't top notch, it's an adorably innocent fic that shows Lyra's relationship with Bon Bon as much as her obsession with walking on two legs. This fic explores characters from a time before the fandom counted views or the author could be messaged. Fanfiction has become a rather serious venture for a lot of people but it's important to remember how innocent we use to be about it and that a good story doesn't need to be perfect.
It's short, it's sweet. Read it.

In this story, Ahuizotal attacks Daring Do in the way she least expected: a lawsuit for libel! Rather than lose her livelihood as A.K. Yearling, she offers the villain co-authorship of the next Daring Do novel. It works! And I mean that both in the story, and as the story.
That's what really impressed me about this tale: it takes an absurd premise, and makes it believable. The characters mesh amazingly well, without being reduced to weird abstractions of themselves as often happens in such stories. Likewise, the author uses the story to showcase a real love of writing, and all the little quirks of the creative process that go with that
It is a genuine pleasure to see the two enemies grow to know each other better as they work together, and to see how the story they create grows stronger from their collaboration. In that sense, it really shows the heart of MLP: We are all better together, as friends, then we are on our own.
Well, that's it for this week, and, it seems, this year. We'll see you back here in 2015. Until then, have fun!
