The power of writing · 4:12am Dec 8th, 2014

It seems odd to me that I should name my first post "The power of writing" since I'm aware that pretty much nobody is going to read this.

I like to write fanfics, but I haven't written the next chapter of my fanfic in ages because I have to do writing that pays. Yes, I'm a copywriter. I'm the guy that writes what you read when you visit the webpage of the company you want to buy a product from.

But I'm also a published author. I have a book, called Flippy's Life Lessons, which, to my surprise, has had sales. You can find it here:
http://www.amazon.com/Flippys-Life-Lessons-Stuff-Single/dp/0989540685

I also write for unhingedmagazine.com, although the site is on a hiatus until next year.

As a writer that writes for marketing purposes, it's easy to assume that for me, writing is just a job. After all, I've had to research and write about many topics that I had no interest about. The examples that come to mind are Louis Vuitton purses, boats, and vaginal infections.

None of what I write gets published as it is. An editor I work with goes through my writing and cuts off parts of it and modifies it as she considers. At first, I used to be very defensive of my writing. Over time, I've gotten used to the idea that editing is part of the job, and it's something that another person should do, since your mind will tend to see what it wants to see.

Yet, in rare occasions, I get to write something like this. Something that allows me to express an idea, or a feeling, or an experience. Or just speak my mind.

And to me. THAT is the true power of writing.
