So I had some thoughts. Rather brilliant ones, if I do say so myself.
-The Rainbooms only transforming when they are playing music is not just a cheap mechanic to force them into the competition - rather, the escalating tensions from their underlying disagreements had grown strong enough that they couldn't activate their magic normally, and it was only in the midst of a song, when their issues were momentarily forgotten, that they were able to activate their magic and transform once more. While I doubt simply linking hands and shouting "friendship is magic" would have done anything either way, if it hadn't been for those issues about the band, they would have had more options at their disposal to use against the Dazzlings
-The Dazzlings needed the gems in order to properly influence people and absorb negative energy, but without them they could still sing well - but the effort against the rainbooms, in combination with the Rainbow Alicorn's devestating attack, damaged their vocal chords. They'll need some time to recover, but eventually they'll be able to sing properly again - they will no longer be able to manipulate others with it, though.
-The pony forms on the boxes actually ARE the siren's true forms; the hippocampus projections are exactly that; projections. Sirens are aquatic cousins of changelings, even if the projections more closely resemble Wendigos, and their wings are actually fins.
-Sunset Shimmer learned guitar while she'd been dating Flash. Joining his band would have hurt her threatening image, but she still practiced in private, surprised by how much she enjoyed the art.
-Starswirl first created the mirror when he'd banished the Sirens, and it was only ever intended for that single use. The mirror also originally only opened when he activated it, and so left unopened for some time, the timelines between the Human world and Equestra fell out of synch at an exponential rate of increase; the first year the Dazzlings remained in the Human world, about ten years passed in Equestria. By the second anniversary of their banishment, it had been a century.
-However, eventually another unicorn (one of Clover's disciples, perhaps?) found and began to study it, and after activating it and hopping between the dimensions with some experimentation, noticed the time difference. (a year passed between their first trip and their second, but only a month had occurred between their visits, from the human perspective) To ensure they wouldn't find themselves accidentally a hundred years in Equestria's future, they reworked the spell on the mirror so that it would automatically open every thirty moons, to ensure the timelines of each world didn't fall too far out of synch, and so if they ever found themselves stranded in the human world, the worst case scenario would be that they'd only miss a couple of years. It was during this time that the base and frame for the mirror were created as well.
-Thusly, the Sirens have only been banished for about seven years from their perspective, yet a thousand years have passed in Equestria, while Sunset has been gone for about eight years in Equestria, yet a whole two and a half years have passed for her. This also explains somewhat why she and Twilight are of similar age now, despite the age gap before she'd left Equestria.
-The De-aging effect when traveling to the human world is another side-effect of Starswirl's hasty casting (even the masters aren't perfect under pressure) but has nothing to do with the time desynching. Thus, Twilight and Sunset are teenaged in the human world, but would both be full-grown mares if they both travel back to Equestria, but there is still no longer an age gap between them.
Nuh-uh! It totally would have worked!
