Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: Over a Barrel · 2:21pm Sep 21st, 2014

Ah yes, the episode that takes centuries of ethnic strife and condenses it into a pie fight. Also, the one where the horsepower of a train is taken completely literally. Let's not tarry on either of those aspects…

I'd have done something with the Fluttertree joke, but Lignify beat me to it.

There's something incredibly sweet about Spike talking to Bloomberg before he settles in. He just accepts that the tree is to be treated and respected as an individual. Much as Spike wants to be, as a nonpony amongst ponies.

Similarly, that it's Fluttershy who tackles Pinkie to the ground when the ponies reunite? That says a lot. Incredible worry leads to incredible relief.

Compared to Applejack, the Appleoosans seem to have a much harder time applebucking. Maybe it's because they're harvesting early. Maybe it's because she's just that good.

It's interesting to note that the main conflict here is between two ally colors. Green wants to adhere to tradition and naturalism. White wants to usher in civilization as it defines the term. Naturally, the compromise leads to a larger, united community

And yes, I'm still going to post the other enemy-colored Refuges and wedge tri-lands as the appropriate episodes come up. I came up with appropriate flavor for those before they were printed in Khans of Tarkir, darn it. (And they were incredibly helpful during the prerelease. Two Frontier Bivouacs and one each of the relevant Refuges? Yes please, thank you, 4-0 for the day.)

And now for the cards:

Combat Baker 1W
Creature — Pony Soldier
T: Tap target creature. That creature's controller gains 1 life.
An earth pony army fights with its stomach.

Instant
Target player skips his or her next combat phase this turn.
Draw a card.
Appleoosans are incredibly proud of their accomplishments, and will show them off at the drop of a hat.

Makeshift Barricade can block any number of creatures.
"We may not have fancy castles, but we'll still protect what's ours."

Sodium interacts strangely with ponies' highly magical physiology. The ponies don't seem to mind.

Encroach 1R

Gain control of up to three target lands until end of turn. Untap those lands. You can't sacrifice them for as long as you control them.
Pony settlers rarely stop to wonder whether or not someone else is already using the area.

Sacrifice "You've Got to Share": Up to X target creatures attack this turn if able, where X is the number of verse counters on "You've Got to Share".

Even on Ungula, there are times when only one option remains.

Never insult dragons or those who prepare your food.

Firehorn Shaman 3R

The buffalo revere dragons, who claim all of the sky as their stampeding grounds.
1/3

Daring Calf GG

"…and his father before him, and his father before him, and his father before him…"
—Chief Thunderhooves

Chief Thunderhooves 4GG
Legendary Creature — Ox Shaman
Trample
Whenever Chief Thunderhooves attacks, each other attacking Ox gets +1/+1 and gain trample until end of turn.
"Ours is a dry land. We water it with rivers of fur and the thunder of hooves."
4/4

Friendship Express 5
Artifact — Equipment
Equipped creature gets +3/+3 and has trample and first strike.
Equip 4
Much more dangerous than the Friendship Local.

Catastrophic Cabaret (rw)(rw)
Instant
Choose yourself or a planeswalker you control. Creatures attack the chosen player or planeswalker this turn if able.
"Everyone's a critic."
—Pinkie Pie, Bearer of Laughter

Strategically Placed Anvil 1RW
Instant
Target attacking creature deals damage equal to its power to itself. Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by that creature this turn.
Despite the reliance on horn and pastry, the Battle of Appleoosa still saw some weaponized iron.

Locomotion Team 4U(rg)
Creature — Pony Artificer
Whenever Locomotion Team attacks a player or planeswalker, you may tap an untapped noncreature artifact you control. If you do, that artifact becomes an artifact creature with power and toughness each equal to its converted mana cost until end of turn, gain trample until end of turn, and is attacking that player or planeswalker.
3/3

Rugged Frontier enters the battlefield tapped.
When Rugged Frontier enters the battlefield, you gain 1 life.

Maybe it's because they're harvesting early. Maybe it's because she's just that good.

Maybe it's Maybelline.

So Temur worked out for you, then? Unfortunately, my Mardu Horde couldn't breach the Abzan fortress. 2-2 isn't bad, though.

And yes, I'm still going to post the other enemy-colored Refuges and wedge tri-lands as the appropriate episodes come up. I have absolutely no clue what any of this means. Explain please?

You need a new name for Rugged Prairie, as that's the name of the RW filter land from Eventide.

My common-friendly card idea for this episode:

Apple Pie Missile - R
Instant
Apple Pie Missile deals 2 damage to target creature or player.

Hoofcraft - Apple Pie Missile deals 4 damage to target creature or player instead if you control three or more Ponies, Pegasi, or Unicorns.

The new Magic: the Gathering set of Khans of Tarkir had its prerelease this weekend. Those are some of the cards for it.

Speaking of, I was unfortunately unable to go to prerelease due to a lack of funds and being incredibly busy (I'm in a play, I'm taking H&R Block's income tax class, I might also be getting a part-time job at Wal-Mart, I was hanging out with my girlfriend, and I've got to get back to writing YAHES Ch. 32. I'm halfway to my minimum word count, but haven't progressed the story in the chapter very far yet.)

I can, however, state that I am a member of the Abzan Houses.

2472044
Yeah. "Play more enormous threats than they can deal with" is a surprisingly effective strategy in Limited. And killing Anafenza with Master the Way was tremendously satisfying.

2472155
As Bardic noted, the prerelease of the latest expansion of Magic was yesterday, and I did very well in the event. However, that set happened to include certain cards that are mechanically identical to ones I have either posted here or have planned for later episodes. I will be posting those cards regardless.

2472252
Well, at least I got the colors right. :twilightsheepish: Fixed, and thanks.

"Eve of War" is an interesting card. Do you play it in your first main phase when you had planned on an alpha strike this turn anyways or play it second main phase and let everyone know you'll be doing an AP next turn. Or maybe you just don't run any creatures... .
It just wrecks havoc in a multiplayer game.

"Chief Thunderhooves" says "other attacking Oxen", which doesn't work because "Oxen" isn't a creature type. ^_^

"Locomotion Team" needs to say "power and toughness each equal" as well as "gains trample" .

2472729 Yeah, a whole bunch of weenies with a couple of Trumpet Blasts is pretty good against most things, especially when I can Ride Down their lifelinking blocker.

I was just thinking that Aurochs might be a better creature type than Ox, and then I saw Stampeding Buffalo. :trixieshiftright:

2488929
Well, aurochs were the precursors of cattle. Really, it's the difference between Wolf and Hound. Also, on Ungula, aurochs are probably Vikings, which is kind of fantastic. Especially if they get in fights with caribou.

2488990
Makes sense!

If enchanted creature has two or more instances of trample, you may have it assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked.

Now that's a neet effect!

Stampeding Buffalo doesn't actually work in the rules. Power/toughness is in layer 7; adding trample is in layer 6. Note that if Stampeding Buffalo worked, Muraganda Petroglyphs wouldn't, at least not the same way (it wouldn't be anywhere near as combo-y).

Here is a proposed fix to the second ability:

If Stampeding Buffalo’s power is 5 or greater, you may have it assign its combat damage as though it had trample.

I'm using this change in my MSE-fication of your sets. Other changes to date (besides universally changing ‘he or she’ to ‘they’, ‘him or her’ and ‘his or her’ to ’their’, and ‘put a foo token with bar onto the battlefield’ to ’create a foo token with bar’) include changing Pony Palanquin to Palanquin Pony (the palanquin is the sedan chair itself, not one of its bearers), editing Diamond Dog Alpha to Diamond Dog Chief (the alpha of a real wolfpack is the father of the majority of them), and pluralizing Diamond Dog Prospector (I used an image with both Spot and Rover in it).

4222789
I've gone a different route with Stampeding Buffalo, using the same formatting as Witch-Maw Nephilim.

As for the name changes, non-artifact vehicles use the creature types of their crews, as Living Airship demonstrates, and Diamond Dog Alpha is intended as a cultural title rather than a biological signifier.

Thanks. Now it works better. Rest will be changed (except that pluralization).
