A pretty popular idea in the winningverse (and I think elsewhere too?) is that Vinyl is a half sister of Twilight's, fathered by Night Light. Since she looks near identical to Shining and all.

The answer to that is a little complicated. I first started using my kitty avatar over a decade ago now. At first, it looked like this:

I've been using DesuSantaKitty ever since (And even had to troll google for the santa hat I used in order to make a bigger version for Fimfic), and still use it on non-pony sites, but when I found that pic of Rarity, I knew I had to use it. And after only a day of Rarity with her usual eye color, I was struck with the ~idea~ that I should tint her eyes to match the kitty in order to stand out from the multitude of other Rarity avatars.
TL;DR: It's a long established tradition of mine with an illustrious history.
