Question for followers of Hypnotic Hijinks/Progress Report (sort of) · 5:20am Aug 24th, 2014
You know, I'm beginning to recognize my greatest weakness as a writer: I'm terrible at being succinct. It irks me to leave out details or funny ideas, even if they don't really contribute much to the story, and I sometimes have trouble recognizing things that don't. I realized this today as I wrote, and it's led me to a bit of a dilemma.
I'm currently working on the next part of Hapless Humans and Hypnotic Hijinks, which, per the early voting, will feature Octavia, Vinyl Scratch, and a musical induction which, I gotta say, the more I think about, the more I'm looking forward to writing. My dilemma lies not with any of those things, but with the fact that word count currently stands at just over 3200, and except for the opening handful of paragraphs, it's all exposition and back story for the POV character, and I haven't even gotten to the pivotal part of that back story which sets up the main story's central conflict.
Since one of my main reasons for writing this is because I know you all enjoy it, I wanted your opinion: Would a great deal of exposition bother you, or would it be okay so long as it better fleshes out the characters and their relationships? Is there a TOO MUCH when it comes to exposition, and can it be quantified?
I don't care how much exposition it is. It helps me to understand the characters, their motives, what's going on in their brain... and how much the hypnosis has affected them when it actually happens.
better than nothing man.
