The Power of Ponies · 5:57am Aug 2nd, 2014
So I just finished the fic Rainbow Typhoon (which is a really good fic and you should read it) and it got me thinking.
Most of the time we look at these colorful ponies and see the gentle and good side, but what are they truly capable of under that cute and cuddly exterior? Could they, if the need was dire enough and the ponies were skilled enough, build disasters on a global scale and hurl them at their enemies? At what point would the ideals of friendship and tolerance give way to fear and anger? And what does that say about us?
As humans we are docile as long as we are kept contented. When our little spheres of life are maintained we are free with our blessings but when that sacred garden is breached by strife or the shock of the unexpected many of us are quick to anger. I've seen it in myself and others: when the day just 'isn't going our way' we lash out at the nearest target. Road Rage is common because it's so easy. I know a man who can be laughing and joking one second and cursing the blighted sons of the earth in the next breath. But I digress.
What does this mean for Ponies? As these wondrous creatures bloomed forth from the mind of our often dark and twisted race are they not the best mirror with which to gaze back at ourselves? I hope that we can emulate the ideals that we so desperately crave.
When will we loose the need to throw hurricanes at our enemies? Let the four hooved sages of peace and tolerance lead the blind humans forward.
I think that their world is pretty similar to ours, and ponies are subject to the same sorts of shortcomings as humans are. But since it's filtered through the lens of a kid's show, we don't get to see all the gory parts.
Look at Sombra, for instance. We got to see him when he was a mere shadow, but what was he like when he was alive? For him to take over and enslave an entire kingdom, I imagine that he killed quite a few ponies. I actually explore that in one of my stories.
While in our world, we might have bombs and other weapons, they might use more nature-based weapons like hurricanes. And, of course, there's magic, which adds a whole new level of fun to the equation
I would argue that the Ponies, and their niceness, are products of an evolutionary background harsher than our own. One of the points of superiority they have over our species is that they are able to struggle to survive, and win, and yet be kind and decent to each other and to those who are willing to be nice to them.
Having said this, against some foes one may have no choice but to fight. Some enemies will not be converted, and they will consider one's own tolerance and kindness but further proof of one's own weakness. The fault is not always in ourselves.
