It seems like this is gonna turn out to be pretty good. The Apples helped him adjust a bit by showing him that everything wasn't quite as alien as he thought and it eased a lot of the internal conflict/pain he had of not only knowing he'd likely never see earth again, but having his only companion threatened like that.
Celestia had her reasons, and very few options, but I think she knew that she had to do that and was willing to take the brunt of his anger. With him being a lot more powerfully built than Lero, he could likely knock a regular pony out with a well placed punch
