Oh man... I'm sorry. I never had an expander, but I can imagine what it's like.
Braces was a journey that I didn't like. They were annoying and eating some foods was really hard (ribs... corn on the cob). But I think you will be pleased with the end results.
Having gone though this myself I would definitely say it's worth it in the end.
