Hi.
So I just read Obs' blog post, and it got me thinking. See, I've been writing fanfics for over a year, and not once have I even touched upon Spike as a character, not even once. I decided to think about it and I have a super high blood sugar right now and stuff like this is how I come down so let me level a bit.
I don't find Spike all that interesting.
It's not that I don't like him as a character unlike the show's writers huehuehue. I think Spike is a fine character. He has an interesting dilemma between his pony upbringing and his dragon instincts and heritage. He's a snarky, critically flawed straight man to the mostly madcap ponies that surround him. Frankly, I find his good-at-heart but jerkass-in-practice behavior utterly fascinating.
Yet I don't think he's interesting in fanfic. Yes, for reasons covered in Obs' post, but for my money, most of these qualities and characters are exemplified in the show pretty efficiently. I have yet to see a fic that does Spike as right as he's done in the show, a fic that acknowledges his jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold nature. He is an utterly unappreciated character in fic.
Again, referring to Obs' post, I feel that the Spike we know from the show has been lost somewhere between the harem fics and the Gary Stuisms. Let's not get into how Season 4 turned him into a punching bag, because even in Season 4, Spike got a few good straight man moments in (I like how they got nicer to him in the latter part of the season for sure). Let's remember that Spike isn't a character because he's a dragon, he's a character because he's a well-intentioned jerk who thinks he's smarter than he actually is. like darf lel no may he rest in pieces He's not supposed to be nice, he's supposed to be trying. He's a reminder that common interests and mutual respect go a long way in friendships, and can overcome extreme differences in personality.
Oh, and stop shipping him with the CMC. Rumbleloo, Maclebloom and Silverbelle must liiiiiive. not really but seriously Guy fuck what Ein thinks Colts must be Rumbleloo in the end k it has to be for a Royalsverse story me n' Cola are gonna do for it to work oops totally not teasing anything to my "fans" also Cola stop being busy already jk real life over all else milady, mi sexy, sexy lady why am I up at 5 AM on a school day when I'm supposed to be up in an hour and a half oh yeah my blood sugar is still nine bajillion though it's going down so
Well, anyways, that about wraps up this morning. That big fic I kept pestering you guys with is in the process of going through editing and should be out... This month? Before convention season?

He IS a little bland, isn't he? But posts like this make me wonder about what the fandom would be like if Spike wasn't written in G4 all together. I guess he would come up in G1-thru-3 conversations,

His name would come up in convention booth interviews. "Are you gonna use Spike? Are you gonna use Tirek? Will the Smooze make an appearance?"
In the end, most fanfictions would be about an adult G1 Spike waking up from hibernation, meeting the Mane Six, and wondering why they look so much like his old friends.
