"Trade Ya" Review · 6:41pm Apr 19th, 2014
An episode focusing on all the main six... and Spike. Yeah, that could work, and it absolutely does.
So the main six are going to Rainbow Falls for this trading convention. There, you can trade anything for anything, as long as both ponies agree to it. Right from the start, you'd feel like it would be a Twilight episode, for it explains how Twilight is supposed to be the in-charge princess there, but it quickly splits into three pairs looking to trade. Twilight is with Pinkie, Rarity with Applejack and Rainbow with Fluttershy. It had some really good pacing; but no real plot.
This episode is mainly based round Friendship, and it pulls it off exceptionally well without using recycled source material. Rainbow is trying to get a book (with the help of Fluttershy), but it doesn't work out in the end. Because Rainbow TRADES FLUTTERSHY FOR A BOOK. Dafuq! Who trades a friend for a book? Anyway, Rarity and Applejack are trying to get some really valuable stuff, and are helping each other out. After a few scrambles, they get each other gifts and become cool again. Twilight is trying to trade her books, and after some help from Pinkie Pie, she realizes how important those books are.
What is amazing about this episode were how in character the main six were. Twilight was Twilight, Pinkie was Pinkie, Fluttershy was—well, you get where I'm going with this. There were even a few humorous moments which related to what was going on. One problem is: there's no real plot. While I loved what was going on, it didn't lead to anywhere other than the main six becoming closer friends; but we really don't need to see that. Oh, and Spike got some comic he wanted at the end.
Pros
-Amazingly paced
-Good pairings
-Cool concept on trading
-Everypony was in character
Cons
-No real plot which doesn't lead anywhere interesting
9.1/10
They have Discord lamps because why the hell not?
I felt that this was a good bit of screwball comedy (just a lot of crazy stuff happening), but the multiple plot lines and how they were resolved still have me confused. I couldn't tell if there were three separate morals, or if the same moral was just learned in different ways. I might need to watch it a few times to fully absorb everything, but I doubt this question's gonna be answered.
2024857 my personal head canon is that it was discord in disguise, just because. It would be just like him to sell lamps in his image,
