OMG WHY DO I HAVE TO POINT THIS OUT · 11:16pm Mar 19th, 2014
Pro tip: if you want to write cute Dislestia fluff about them reminiscing about a shared past, maybe that shared past should not include DISCORD KILLING ALL THE ALICORNS EXCEPT CELESTIA AND LUNA.
I don't know about you, but hanging out with the guy who murdered my entire species doesn't really make me feel fluffy and romantic, does it do that for you?
Jesus H Christ on a pogo stick, people, how do you not get that genocide != cute and fluffy? Discord cannot be both Rasputin and the love interest in an Anastasia-based songfic. It doesn't work.
(Must... resist... temptation to flame...)
This travesty brought to you by the letters fanfiction.net and the number 70 zillion.
Hahaha, I always thought the same.
"Awww, how cute~ the man who commited genocide against my entire kind is hitting on me!"
is my answer to this
... People do this?
Wait, what am I saying? Of course they do. You even invoked fanfiction.net...
Ugh. Yeah. Sometimes people have a serious disconnect when it comes to history. They don't seem to understand that it can bring consequences with it. I could see Discord totally not putting two and two together, because he doesn't necessarily like history (it repeats itself, so he'd want to liven it up at best or re-imagine it perhaps), but Celestia has absolutely no excuse. I don't care how many years have passed.
Besides, I'm firmly in the camp where Discord is against killing. (Darkfics that are well-written I make exceptions for.)
I think the only time this scenario could work is if Celestia had Stockholm Syndrome and even then that's sketchy.
Forgot to add...
I'm guessing you're referring to the animated movie, because crappy fanfics are often inspired by well-known movies, but my next thought was for the song by Boney M and I was all ready to rock. I would love a Discord fanfic inspired by that.
To be fair, it depends on the sequence of events and what exactly it was that turned Discord to this act of genocide. But mind you -- there are only a limited set of sequences of events which work with this without Celestia having to be batshit crazy in order to still feel anything positive toward Discord.
In the Pony POVerse, Discord does something horrible but not as bad as you've described here (he wipes out the immortal Ponies of Paradise Estate who raised Celestia, Luna and Discord), but:
(1) this is because Discord's earlier personality (called "Dissy") was utterly overwhelmed by his Cosmic self when he remembered his true nature, and
(2) his earlier personality wasn't really all that bad, and it is this earlier personality that Celestia had loved. And Celestia doesn't wind up loving the new, murderous Discord -- she just regrets the loss of her childhood sweetheart.

Oh, yeah. I mean in one of my own tracks (the Discord as Q series), Discord was instrumental in putting down the alicorns. Except that Celestia and Luna helped. Because the alicorns were evil. And Celestia and Luna were unicorns that Discord turned into alicorns so they would have some hope in hell of fighting their own battle. (You say you want a revolution...) Also the alicorns got turned into stone (by the Elements of Harmony, wielded by Celestia and Luna, not by Discord), so they're technically not dead, though since they sleep, unlike the Q, they're not suffering for it.
It can be done believably. But... well, let's just say it wasn't. :-)
My opinion on that is that Discord rarely intentionally kills because he'd rather play with Ponies, and he knows one can't play with them after one has killed them. This is supported by canon -- the time Discord fights the Mane Six, at no point does he do anything to any of them which is likely to kill his target. Mind-warp them, yes, but not kill them.
I think that even if Discord is murderous, interesting Ponies (such as are the Mane Six) are especially unlikely to be killed by him, because he'd rather keep them alive for future fun and games.
I laughed so hard at this. xD
