    Mother of God, pt. II

This post isn't just about le art, but first things first:

You guys remember how Wisp's cutie mark was kind of technically definitely stolen? Well, no more. Finally, at long last, it has happened:

    Kinda big news (rewriting)

So last night I spent a good several hours talking with a couple friends about Fireflank. At first it was about a few important things I might change about the story at large (and most particularly my concerns that I may allow Wisp to come off as "too" talented magically), but as things progressed and more input was given, I became convinced that it would indeed be in my best interests to go over

    I'm horrible

So I was working on Fireflank. I really was. But then Fallout: Eclipse sucked me in until I was done with its first chapter and I'm terrible.

The Tiniest Update - Fireflank Time

Just letting it be known that I'm now focusing again on Fireflank, having decided it best to work on the story that's actually at a fully writable stage. Doing at least a little bit every day.

Wisp "Fanart", her cutie mark, and updates. Oh, and small title change? · 8:39pm Mar 17th, 2014

A friend made me this weeks and weeks ago, for free. Not really fanart, more of a gift, but you know.

I decided to not post it immediately because there was a possibility more lines of color would be added to her mane rather than just the single band of pink, but plenty of time is passed and I really don't think that's necessary. More importantly, I love it, and it's about time my/her few fans get a better look at her (though her hair isn't quite as spiky or wild as I envision, she still looks damn great and that's what matters).

Also, her friend (whom I'm closer to) made me some animated pixel art. I love this, too, because the mane is damn perfect, and the tail also is closer to how I imagine her. Maybe have that look a bit closer to the mane's style and have a full-body portrait made of that, and there'll be nothing more I could ask. lol

Also, here's what I made with the new 3D OC generator.

With that out of the way, I must point out that I had a realization a few days ago: Back when I was searching for a cutie mark, I just found one on Google and saved it. Ergo, I took someone else's work without permission. So of course, I contacted the creator, TwilitMoon, on deviantArt. He appreciates that I came to him about it, but would prefer I come up with my own replacement.

Much of Wisp's character was inspired by this cutie mark, but indeed, it would be best to create a new one, similar in theme but not just plucked from an artist's hands. Besides, this way she can have something perhaps more appropriate painted on her behind. I think the colors will be similar or perhaps identical, and it still shall be some sort of flame, most likely, but it will be an original creation just for her, as it should be. Those friends of mine mentioned above may be able to help me with this, or I may end up finding help from a vector artist elsewhere (as while I appreciate their talents, from what I've seen, neither of them specialize in show-accurate-style vector art and whatnot).

So yeah, that's a thing.

And now, finally, since I'm posting anyway... I still deeply regret how I've basically done nothing with the story in almost a year now, and I still have trouble and doubts and worries when it comes to actually writing more. I can't say anything is going to happen right away, as usual, but I'm very fond of Wisp and of the ideas I've had for the story, and the only way to do something is to do it. I can't make things as good as I would like due to lack of experience, and I don't consider myself a writer; I spend all my time playing games and hanging out with online friends and such. However, I have had some ideas for other things to write about, and either way... My first, favorite story doesn't need to be perfect. I really should just... do it.

I can't be certain I'll write anything besides Fireflank, or even finish it. But once I get some other things on my mind out of the way, I'm planning on finally pulling that crap back up and at least finishing the final polish for the existing chapters and at least write a new one. And trying to plan out more of the story. Perhaps if I get a clearer idea of just what I'm going to do (and can get myself off my ass long enough to make things clearer), it'll be easier to continue working on it.

Wish I could say something with passion and certainty here, but when I've done that before, it's in the moment, and makes a liar of me when the motivation fades. So, if any of you still look forward to more... Well, you can probably expect at least a little.

(Also, I've been thinking of changing the title. Just switching "Unicorn" with "Mare", really. I also have a sudden idea of just naming it "Fireflank," but I think that's too abrupt and too big a change. What do you guys think?)

First, it is good to hear from you. I had written that story off so hearing that it may not be dead is nice.

As for the title, I am really not liking "mare". I cannot really say why, but it is just not clicking for me. That said, "pony" would probably work because the show rarely distinguishes between the two and it is still accurate while flowing better. I do not really care either way between "pony" and "unicorn" so that is up to you, but I would also avoid "Fireflank" because it seems too abrupt to me as well.

I'm glad you think so. I definitely don't want to just let it die, but wrestling with my own worries and sense of inadequacy is difficult when I'm pretty much new to this. However, I've been following an artist or two long enough to get the idea that such feelings are natural, and I just have to push past that and do what I can. So I'm gonna try... lol

But enough of that. Hm. I do still like the sound of Mare, but I'm not so fond of Pony. I'll probably just leave it as is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, eh? :moustache:

As for "Fireflank," that'll just be affectionate shorthand for the full title, methinks. :duck:

1934383 That is good to hear. The only way to build up confidence is to try, so you will need to get it to good enough and publish. After all, we all know that nothing is ever perfect so we will not tear you apart over a tiny grammatical error or something.

As for the title, you should do what you like best. I think it is fine as is and agree that "Fireflank" is better as a nickname, but it is your story so it is your call and you should pick something you like because the important part is that you are happy with your own writing.

Quite true, that... And on a related note I just finished writing up a backstory and several defining traits for Shooting Star. Combined with finally coming up with her actual design today, and well... I'm as fond of her as ever. lol

And on that note (...since I'm on the subject anyway), I think part of this final polish is going to involve some significant changes. I'm likely to tear Cloud Kicker out to perhaps cameo later, lessen the gravity of the Canterlot situation (I'd like the conflict there to be more personal rather than immense), make Star a bit less of a villain... etc. I want to cut out more of the fat and focus some things a bit more. Or to try to.

Anyway. Indeed, I find that in certain areas, my opinion or decisions can be easily influenced, but... Well, I do still like Unicorn, lol. Part of why I thought of switching it to Mare was to have it be a bit more vague yet feminine, but at the same time, I'm thinking I don't feel strongly enough about it to actually go through with it. lol

1935180 Sounds good, I am looking forwards to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks for your support, sir. *salutes*

And just btw, I'm also thinking of changing the perspective to first person, so that could be fun. lol
