Seriously, after watching that episode who could ever say otherwise? Spike is a boss, and everypony knows it. Rarity is flipping out over her crush on Trenderhoof, and he stays by her side to weather the storm like a champ.
It was curious, how mature he was in this episode. We started to talk about it in the Spike group and the TL Skype, when something became apparent to me. It's something I don't want to spoil, since I just wrote a fic about it! If you are interested in what it was I saw, I suggest you take a look at.
It's a short little 1K thought experiment. Take a few and give it a look, see if you agree with what I saw in this episode.
That is what I love about this dynamic, it is always changing, always flipping the table on us. We went into this episode expecting Spike to do one of two things, react sadly to Rarity's crush or do nothing at all. The writers took a third option, and boy was it awesome.

About the episode's only saving grace was Spike's maturity. That fourth-wall breaking was just perfect.
And give AJ some props, too, for showing Rarity how uncharacteristically bitchy she was.
I absolutely love how Spike handled everything.
