Question: My Writing Style · 1:52am Jan 21st, 2014
In light of a wonderfully scathing review of Dragoon Wars in Zero Punctuation style, I have been taking a look back on the writing I have done, and among other things, I have really been questioning one critical part of how I write. My emotional description and its role in pacing. Depending on the sort of answer I can get and/or find, it may affect how I continue writing all of my stories. (It's a situation like this that makes me wish I could tag multiple stories with the blog)
I am far from the best judge of my own work, but I know I write at an acceptable level for my own enjoyment. Nevertheless, I do crave improvement, and this is one part of my writing that I am not sure how or if I should change it.
I do a lot of emotional description. I weave it to coincide with the narrative so that te narrative itself is an extension of the train of thought the character experiences. The price I seem to have paid with that is that overall plot progression speed has been sacrificed so that I can flesh out the experiences of the character and how they view the world, ponies, and events around them.
What I am unsure of is whether that sacrifice still keeps my stories good. I know this writing style I currently have is longer and more grueling. It takes more time to write than a series of actions, and it as a result takes longer to read. I worry that I risk becoming a boring author, and that even when I do reach the high octane chapters that I aspire to, my style of writing will have bored my readers and lost their interest before they get to the parts I am especially proud of.
So the question I pose to any of you, my readers, that have followed some of my work, is if or how I should change this aspect of my writing. Is the level of description I give in that area enjoyable? Or should I try cutting down on it more often to give more plot-driving, fast paced narrative that allows me to tell my tales more quickly?
