    An ending

Credit due RandomPerson for shouting enough times into the void. Originally my response to just them privately, I feel it saves me writing it twice and captures something nicely to instead post this here, for anyone else who might yet wander by and, of course, for Random.

    Reviews for writers

That's a working title, but the gist is this:

I've started a little project whereby I'll be reading and reviewing stories, in the spirit of sprinkling a little more attention and perspective on where you might need it.

    Valentine's eve

While I've always semi-seriously (but not really) been an advocate for Valentine's eve - the night and counter-festival for hate, spite, apathy, loneliness and indulgent negativity...

    An unconsolidated thought

The next chapter of Washed Up will be available tonight or - failing that - tommorow.

    On to idle words:

A thought that I've had bouncing around for a time was to compare the stories of Starcraft 1 and 2. Ever since I first glanced a sunken colony over our korean exhcnage student's shoulder, I was enamoured with the korpulu sector.

That is all.

To give this blog some actual value, let me add this for my PvSC readers:

What do you Want to see happen? What do you Think will happen? What types of chapters stand out? Which fall flat?

Having just found this, really, what works for you is doing nicely, its fun, enjoyable, a mix of knowledge for both setting making it a gem, really.

I confess I feel like it's begun getting a bit darker and more somber and I was really enjoying it for the comedy and silliness. So I would sort of like to see it go back to that. That aid the story really does seem to be taking a much darker turn and I'm certainly not gonna stop reading just because it's getting a bit darker/serious.

I like all the characters well enough ^^; What do I think is going to happen? Well you seem to really be taking Pinkie down Kerrigan's route and that one of the others or even Fluttershy might take the Jim Raynor route and be her possible redeemer.

I'm guessing as I've never really gotten into the Starcraft games and just glances at Wikipedia.

Mhmm. Seems good ol' Cerberus Syndrome is at it again. I do think the story (if we can call it such a thing) is broad enough that some aspects can afford to be a little more plottable, with a bit more seriousness, without having to sacrfice the rampant absurdity and silliness the rest of the story plays in. That said, most of the chapters have been Mane Six chapters lately, and they are sort of stately progressing into an arc.

Suppose I have been neglecting other characters and other eccentricities for a while, though...

1616734 Really!? Yaaaay! I confess the reason I got into this fic was just because it was so fun and silly and when it started getting more sad and dark I was feeling touch more leery. I'm glad that doesn't seem to be such an issue though :yay:

I will add here that I don't want to simply slap ponies on top of a storyline that the games have already done. It's one thing to run with parallels and parodies, and quite another to copy it word for word and swap names around, and I like to think I've a line in the proverbial sand of writing somwhere between the two.

That said, SC1 and its expansion : Brood War have, I felt, always had mucher better story writing and development. SC2 WoL and HotS, much as I love them, come across more as summer blockbuster, popcorn style writing.

The BW especially is loved for its twists and turns, and how even as the missions play out you get this terrible lurking sensation that you're missing something, doing something wrong, overlooking something...

The second game forgoes the character driven story that the first had, and instead what we get is simplified characters as prior development is shoved back into the archetype box. Kerrigan especially as a character suffers in this way, going from the glorious Queen Bitch of the Universe (self proclaimed, self proven) she was into the Dark Action Girl / Apocalypse Maiden / Dark Messiah / Determinator / Dasmel in Distress tropes that were slapped on top of her.

I'd go so far as to say that the potrayal of Kerrigan as a character is the single biggest failing of the second game.

The original game had a much more interesting level design, which wasn't as 'convienant' as the second game strives for. Sometimes your base would be really oddly shaped, or too small, or the resources would be spread in odd ways, and it was up to you to decide how you were going to deal with that. It rewarded innovative play and didn't have this craving for the [one level : one unit type featured] both HotS and WoL cater to. The second game is quite insistant about THIS being the unit you need to use this level, and THIS is the unit you need to use this next level, and so on.

All this is entirely beside the point, but it's a rant I like to rinse and repeat every now and again.

Basically, in short: I like starcraft. hi.

1618090 *Looks up curiously as a giant jet passes overhead* Hi, I've never played a single Starcraft game and know next to nothing about the series :rainbowlaugh:

I definitely hear you on wanting to keep parody and a direct copy separate. for what it's worth, I was thinking you weren't going to the exact copy route as I think it would've been hard to shoehorn it in with the fic as it stands. I'm really enjoying the overarching plot and I think it should be really cool to see how you take it. I can appreciate focusing on good characters too. I just started another SC parody fic that sort of confused me as all the characters (minus the protoss) are drooling idiots. Referring to things as Dudes who shoot back and Towers that shoot dudes. or wasting all their ammo cuz stuff looks cool when it blows up. It's amusing and fun but sort of baffled me as I didn't think of SC as being that ...well dumb.:twilightsheepish:
