So, finally got the whole "Watch Equestria Girls" thing out of the way. Obviously it wasn't the end of the fandom as we know it, though I didn't like it too much. The way the humans looked really threw me off, and the villain was pretty unimpressive when lined up to previous antagonists (her ultimate final form was atrocious). A thing I did like was that it fit in just fine with the series: One could easily imagine this as just an hour-long episode.
As far as episodes go...it wasn't great, but it wasn't the worst ever. In my opinion, that award goes to Games Ponies Play (Dear Princess Celestia: Today I learned we can screw everything up from the first minute and circumstances will still conspire to save us).
So now, the big thing to look forward to is season 4. Before any screenshots get leaked or major rumors start circulating, here's my own predictions for some of the episodes we'll be seeing.
-Rarity is actually generous: All the girls have moments where they struggle with their element, but Rarity does it consistently. She seems to only be generous when they're making a point of it, and there are frequent instances of her displaying greed. She is well-past due for an episode showing that she's plenty generous...she just doesn't advertise it. Like this little 3-part comic strip.
It feels like such an obvious, easy plot that I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been used yet. As they start exhausting other options, I have some confidence this will come up.
-Earth Ponies are cool, too: Pegasi can fly. Unicorns can magic. Thus far, earth ponies seem to have lost the genetic lottery. Even if it's just a greater connection to the land or somesuch, I feel it reasonable to believe there will be some kind of demonstration that they're "special" too. Really would seem to go with the vibes of the show.
-It's okay to be different: The show's pretty inclusive. We've made friends with foreigners (Zecora), ugly people (Cranky), uber-dorks (Twist), and bullies (Babs). I can see the trend continuing. The obvious choice will be throwing some unusual race at us, like a griffon, or even a changeling. I'm hoping that they do something a little more mature: Someone with a major disability. A new blind kid at school, or one missing a leg. Super extra points if it's about accepting someone with a mental disability...though I'm not holding my breath on that one. Between the whole "Derpy" thing and the comedic take on Snips and Snails, odds are pretty long on them poking the issue.
-'Equestria Girls' episode: Look, when you work within the confines of a cartoon aimed at little girls, you have limited options for your plots. Suddenly, it has become canon that a whole new world of humans exists beyond a magic mirror. This is a gold mine for the writers. I expect at least one episode of cross-dimensional hijinks. Maybe Twilight's friends come to visit, or she goes back to avert some other catastrophe. Either way, I doubt we've seen the last of the humies.
-With Great Power, etc.: Twilight's a princess now. Again, a wealth of material for the writers. A mature plotline might be the gang trying to stay connected as her new duties limits her time with them. More likely possibilities are misadventures as she presides over ceremonies, learns "Alicorn Magic" (good excuse to keep her studying), and starts figuring out her place in the universe.
-CMC: Forever Blank: Would bet against the trio getting their cutie marks. Would've bet against Alicorn Twilight, too, so who knows?
Remember, "prediction" is just a big word for "guess." The writers have said they're being a little bolder this season, which I think grabs everyone's interest.
So, here's to a good S4. Preferably one that's 26 episodes.
Because these totally look like normal humans (I don't see anyone bitching about their skin colour)
