    Where I've Been

So, I've been taking writing really seriously over the past year. I got 15,000 words out of NaNoWriMo; not bad for a busy month running science festivals. I finished the manuscript in June, sold my retro game systems the funds for self-publishing e-books, and joined a forum thread on one of my boards to write 500 words a night. I was feeling pretty good, especially considering I'm finally a

    Hooves Holding Hearts contest

So, working on the next chapter. No one reading the last one got the hints about the new kid, who is the story's main kid. I'll give these out, and the first person (and maybe a few others) who get it right will earn a small OC cameo in HHH.

Now, the kid's an OC...but the mother is not.

Here are the first few hints.

    Hooves Holding Hearts Edit

So, I changed a scene in chapter four. I changed it because it didn't work, and others complained with a reasonable point.

It happens near the end of the chapter.

    Spoilers ahead.

    I mean, really spoilers.

If you haven;t read the chapter, it kind of ruins the punch to know this...

    Ready.

So, when John is confronting the father....

    What the pre-readers are saying...

Just so you know, here's some comments on the Hooves Holding Hearts chapter that drops this week.

"She had a really miserable childhood, didn't she?"

"Holy freaking s***! Nevermind Jazz, you are not worst parent anymore!"

"This is both heartwarming and utterly heartbreaking at the same time. You magnificent bastard."

    Story Progress!

Chapter four of Hooves Holding Hearts is off to the pre-readers! I'm going to try to get a C&D chapter done next, I think. I'm having to split time between pony writing and writing things I actually intend to e-publish for money, but I intend to finish the crop of stories I have, maybe saving a week in summer to write "Doctor Whooves and the Mare in the Moon."

Behind the Scenes: Chapters 1 & 2 · 4:44am Nov 14th, 2011

Hey everypony! Chapter 3 is over 3,700 words now; just a little bit to go. I expect to have it posted by Tuesday at the latest. Your comments have appraised me of the value of repeat proofreading.

It's running a little longer because it has a scene with some bonding time between Celestia and Luna. I've read some fan fictions where the focus goes off the main character for a chapter. Even when those chapters are awesome, some of us still want to jump back to the main plot. I'm making sure there's still about 3,000 words of our favorite perky 80's pony girl no matter how much side stuff gets in.

My pre-reader suggested I share some details. There's a funny story behind Principal Placeholder. I had a hard time coming up with a name for the school official in chapter one, so I named him 'Principal Placeholder' until I could come up with something. The name rsounded so good that I decided I have to base a character around it. Let me tell you, coming up with his cutie mark was a hassle!

My friend has noted the similarities to Kovat, the Cardassian lawyer from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. He's paid to happily lose cases, and is confused when he wins his first one. I'm willing to admit that may have been kicking around in my subconscious when I created his personality.

Next chapter, we get a look inside Screwball's head, and the first appearance of the other teachers. Trust me; Cheerilee is not going to be happy. But hey, it's an 80's movie! Things should work out, right?

P.S. Did anyone catch the Lord of the Rings quote in chapter 2? :D
