Finally got around to watching the finale. I have a controversial position about the big thing that happened in it.
True True Friend might be better than Smile Smile Smile.
Oh, and I dodged a bullet with all the new Starswirl stuff. That could have really messed up what I was planning for Stitch in Time, but what they gave us (Starswirl left incomplete spells lying around... like time loop spells. He didn't have as good an understanding of friendship which, heh, oh yes. That's gonna work VERY well) doesn't disrupt my plan very much at all. Anyway, it's looking more and more like I'm going to be going back and de-un-canoning the alternate ending. Though it still wasn't something that Twilight (well, our Twilight) ever lived through. So because I'm a crazy pony I'll be trying to keep both Stitch and Law Offices of Artemis Stella and Beat going at the same time.
Plus tomorrow I will have been registered here at FiMfiction for one full year! I'm such a great pal I'm even going to tell you exactly what I want for an anniversary present: Suggestions for a picture to go with the next story I'll be starting! Because I haven't foggiest idea what it should look like. Here's your title and description though.

i always took your alternate ending being "non-canon" to mean that it wasn't going to be the basis for which your sequel was based off of ... though i'm glad that the show's world-canon wound up not conflicting with your head-cannon ... i've seen some writers get very bothered by it who were unable to continue ongoing fic's because it was too frustrating for them
as for "True True Friend" topping "Smile Smile Smile" .... well ... i think i might be with you there ... i don't know why but that song makes me cry when i watch it as part of the episode (some reason listening to just the song doesn't though ... which is weird)

I gotta say the whole Starswirl leaving around extremely dangerous unfinished spells thing in the finale did make me think about Hard Reset.

For me, the townsponies yelling PINKIE! like they've suddenly rediscovered her always kind of gets me. More subtly, when AJ goes to the farm during the song and helps Pinkie fix the rain gutter, watch Pinkie's face. The water pouring onto her looks so much like she's crying with frustration. That and her flat mane just positively YANK at my heartstrings, even as it's tiny little moment that's never even commented on. Shame the episode ended right at the second commercial break. Yep, super strange that the episode never had a third act and if you say otherwise, then I'd point out that LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA LA LA!
(Seriously though, I'm seeing where the first couple eps of S4 go before I pass final judgement)

I can’t help but notice that that is “Zecora with a bucket”, just as 847368 suggested.
848096 Actually since I had already had the coincidental connection to Hard Reset on my mind, when Twilight got element-beamed into a black stain on the floor right before the commercial break my first thought was Spike saying "Well that didn't work." My second thought was that it would have been hilarious if they just cut to the credits right then. It would have been the perfect point to split a multi-part episode anyway.

I get so confused now, because somehow Hard Reset became my own personal canon (as has Pinkie's Party canon).
Now I feel the season 3 finale is not as canon as Hard Reset. How dare you write such an amazing fic. And I went and did a gorram dramatic reading of it.
