It's the obligatory new year blog post.

And yes, I am posting this at around midnight on new year. I have a nasty cold, so I decided to disobey nurgle's one command and stay home.

    Just for kicks

I'm mucking around with Lulu for a work-related project (very boring stuff) and thought I would do a quality test with something fun.

    The odd things

I've just been reading through old comments on my scraps story, after publishing yet another chunk from the ancient cutting room floor. It's remarkable how many of the commenters are still around - but also how many logged off for the last time, soon after making their last comment there.

    But in brighter news

While I'm not making any promises about any particular project here, I am actually writing again. I figure if I write enough of something, some pony words might drop out somewhere along the line as well. You never know. What I'm working on at the moment is essentially a re-write of a story I read a long time ago; an old pulp sci-fi tale, about a spaceship that manages to get lost in the

Sometimes I get ideas at work AND THEY MUST BE BLOGGED · 12:47pm Feb 13th, 2013

This was largely compose on my phone in between jamming wires into sockets and gluing them to walls, so it'll be a little rough. Thank god for Google Docs as well otherwise I'd have been swearing at how many times I had to re-write it.

A potential future arc of Guiding Light (Which is, if you're wondering, about Derpy becoming princess).

The morning had started out bad and only become worse. Her robes, new robes she'd commissioned only a month previously to celebrate her new enhanced role in the court had disappeared and the staff had given her peculiar looks when she'd quizzed them about it, their feigned ignorance and apparent confusion only serving to increase her own frustration over what should have been a minor problem. Her secretary had disappeared, replaced with a stallion she'd never even met in her life yet who acted with a disturbing familiarity. To cap it off, in a rather cruel prank someone had placed an extra diploma certificate on the wall there, celebrating research she'd abandoned after the untimely disappearance of the former Diarchs.

Twilight Sparkle grumbled at the injustice of a day so cruel and ponies with so little compassion as to do such a thing, as she made her way toward the throne room. The Court wouldn't sit for at least another hour, but she knew her friend would be there already, settling some minor account with whomever happened to be around or merely basking in the bright sunlight streaming through the great hall's stained glass windows. She needed a friend now. The others were away, either back home in Ponyville or (in at least Rarity's case) travelling Equestria in some capacity. Out of reach. Twilight found she'd come to rely on the comfort of her friendship with the Princess more and more these past months, in ways that sometimes took her away into odd, lengthy periods of introspection.

The hubub of voices became apparent as Twilight approached the throne room, clearly the sound of the royal court in full session. And that was odd. Suddenly all the niggling little thoughts that had been nagging at the back of Twilight's mind came to the fore. She slowed, eyes darting around as she tried to understand what was going on. She slowed, noticing more and more little details that were confusing or just plain wrong. The guards uniforms bore the wrong sigil. The doors to the throne room were no longer decorated with the three bright globes of DeRaptura's crest, nor did the numerous flags hanging around the broad hallways. The palace had been far too busy, something she'd never missed under Derpy's reign. Twilight stared up at the twinned discs of the sun and moon affixed to the doors and tried to ignore the feeling of a growing lead weight in the pit of her stomach.

She nodded to the guards as she pushed open the door. She'd never seen either of them before in her life.

Beyond the doors, in the brightly lit court, a dozen or so ponies milled around the foot of the throne, waiting their turn to petition the Princess. They turned at the sound of her entry, a few frowning as if confused at her presence, but almost all of them recognising her. Twilight could see a few familiar faces but her eyes quickly wandered away to the room itself. More change. The sun motif that had once been so familiar was repeated over and over again as if it had never been replaced. Never taken away. Her eyes continued to rove, but as they came toward the throne she forced them shut, no longer willing to see what she knew must inevitably be seated there.

A voice called out her name. Twilight shook her head and whimpered her response. It wasn't possible, it couldn't be possible. She backed away, only to halt with a terrified yelp as she bumped into another pony. Unable to navigate she finally forced her eyes open and looked wildly around the room. Her eyes came to rest on the throne by their own volition, drawn to the bright, welcoming glow emanating from the pony seated there.

The voice spoke again, calling out Twilight's name, but the unicorn could only shake her head and cower away in fear as the ghost stalked down the dais toward her. The court fell silent, the scandalised whispering of moments earlier fading as they realised the gravity of events. As one they drew close as they dared, pressing Twilight toward the Princess even as she sought every possible avenue of escape. The voice spoke a third time, filled with concern and worry, feelings she had never before associated with this pony to this degree.

Twilight Sparkle looked up into the eyes of Princess Celestia, filled with the motherly love that had once brought her so much comfort over the years and now with obvious fear at her behaviour. And then she screamed.
