Well, it's official, people. Under A Luminous Sky and Finding Your Place are both likely going to be against canon.
Think about it: if ANYPONY deserves to be a princess, it's Twi. And honestly, it's a culmination of everything she's learned. Also, this could open up whole new realms of drama for the show. Maybe now well get a true Celestia/Luna origin story!
We, as bronies, tend to overreact, ie Derpygate. But when you think about it... it kinda makes sense. I'm kind of curious to see where they go with this. I think it could be very interesting. Maybe if we're lucky, this will take the show away from the slice-of-life stories and more towards adventure.
So, in conclusion, I, for one, welcome our new Princess Twilight overlord! And hey, if she becomes immortal, she can spend more time with Spike! She will, of course, have to watch her friends wither and die, but hey, what're ya gonna do?

why people are freaking out, i'll never know. shows change, like Sitcoms. they bring in new characters, get rid of old ones, and a main character will get married or have a kid.
and as for fics, just use a Alternate Universe tag or say they take place in a Season 3-less universe.
I think the rule of thumb people have is, if you submitted/created your fic before canon changed then you can keep it as is. If created after then AU tag. But I am sure that rule is malleable. Still, put me down in the anti Twilicorn camp.

but I have faith in the writers, as long as the Hub higher ups give them the flexibility to make Alicorn Twi work, that is. It won't work if they give her wings, make her a princess, and then she goes back to living in Shady Oaks Library and sending Celestia friendship reports.
If this is going to work they need to change the formula drastically, which is ballsy for a show this successful. Why fix what isn't broken? The fact that Alicorn Twi requires a big formula change makes me suspect that this is being pushed through to sell more toys. Which would be the

Making her the adventure princess could work, in fact that would be pretty badflank now that I think about it. They wanted to do more adventure stories with Zecora being a sort of second mentor to Twi, and Luna being the adventure princess. I always liked that idea. And fully accepting and playing with the concept of immortality and the the weight of responsibility, as Twi learns to be a princess could be awe-inspiring
If a little mature and highbrow for the 6-12 year old girls that still make up the intended audience.
Honeslty, I hope this is a cock tease, and Twi ends up turning down the promotion because, "I still have so much left to learn about the magic or friendship!"

To be fair, and continued spoilers here, the name of the episode is Magical Mystery Cure.
With that title in mind, I have two ideas how the episode will play out.
Either Twilight's going to get sick somehow, and the only way for her to be cured is by turning into an Alicorn...
...or...
She and either Celestia or Luna switch places due to a magical mishap. Either by the end of the episode, or the next season (if there is one, it would be a good cutoff point...celestia forbid) there would be a cure found to reverse the effects.
The first of my ideas seems far less likely to me, so I'm hoping that Twilight gets her princess on for an episode, but everything goes back to normal by the end. Really, this is a pretty good damn option if they want to continue the show.

Well, my official guess is that she will be made a princess and alicorn, but by the end of the episode, she'll be a unicorn again. The article says they want to play with the idea of what a princess really is. So maybe she'll decide to be a princess in title only?

Twilight would make a terrible immortal princess.
She's obsessive-compulsive, selfish and short-sighted. She makes poor leadership decisions (Mare-do-well comes to mind), is willing to cheat even when the utmost faith is put in them to complete a task right (keep calm and flutter on), and is not above hypocrisy (Mare-do-well and magic duel).
These are not the qualities of someone who should be given ultimate power.

You can only do so much to future-proof your stories when they're based on a still-running show. Magic Duel ended up de-legitimizing (that's really the best word I can come up with at the moment; in my defense, it's quarter to 1 in the morning) the backstories I had for Trixie in Reinventing Trixie and Written In Dust. All you can do is shrug and say "the ideas were developed before the show changed things; just imagine it as an alternate timeline".
Besides, I'm not sure they're ready to alter the basic premise of the show that radically. Something will happen to restore the status quo, or at least something akin to it.

766201 Why are people freaking out? I've seen this before. It was a show called Heroes years ago that was quite decent. It went off the rails after that writers strike when they tried to make its villain Sylar (Zachary Quinto. Now Spock in the the new Star Trek) into a hero. Then it was canceled.
I do not want to witness that happen again.
