I always knew trucking was hard. · 10:12pm May 22nd
I always knew this industry is not the one I was made for, too. So, why am I a trucker? Why have I been one for... what is it, three years now? No, three and a half.
It's because the trucking industry is the only one that'll hire. So why won't anyone else hire?
That's obvious. My resume sucks.
I have skills. I'm good at a lot of things. But those skills don't come from school or work.
And those skills most certainly do not include resume writing.
So why do I have to have a good-looking resume to have a chance, no matter what is or isn't in it?
And why is the only job I can actually get one that's going to kill me? Especially now that I don't have a personal vehicle, so I can't commute...
So I feel like I have to ask, even though I also feel like I shouldn't have to.
Do you know anyone that's willing to hire a technically-oriented American with no professional experience in the field for remote work, without demanding a platinum-plated resume?
Sorry, I can't really help you there.
Not exactly a useful response to be sure.
Can try threatening to not do trucking with your friends if you want more money out of it. Tho I imagine you want your time back.
You could consider taking bounties on cyber security if you're good at technical stuff like hacking, or train that up with practice stuff. I heard that pays well, tho you don't have any guarantees you'll have consistent work.
That all said, I'm jobless too. I even have 13 years of laundry experience and I couldn't get a job at another laundromat that was hiring, so I feel you.
Anything worth doing is hard. If you've been doing it for three years, you're good at it.
Don't know if that helps, but it's true.
If you've got a CDL already Amazon will almost certainly hire you directly to their transportation division, which is mostly yard operations and/or short haul trips between sites.

Yeah, I know I'm good at it... Doesn't make it stop killing me, though. And I mean that literally- the food is one thing, but the 70h work week is killing me inside as well. I actually found myself wondering last night exactly how many amps are required to make the 120V output of this truck's AC power inverter lethal- that's how bad it's getting. Fortunately, there are better, less-lethal options available... I think.

If I've already got a CDL, almost every trucking company in the country will hire me at the drop of a hat. Especially with a 3-year, squeaky clean record like mine. Unfortunately, that's the very job that's slowly tearing me apart.

Well Amazon wouldn't ask you for 70's at least, probably wouldn't even demand 50's outside of Black Friday season. Four 10-hour days on, three days off.
I do understand though, sometimes you just need something different.

For a driving job? They'll demand full 70s, because truckers are exempt from overtime and the truck has to roll that much to be profitable, so why bother hiring more drivers when you can make the few you have work harder? Especially since each driver still has to be paid benefits, and those are a per driver rather than per truck expense...
I was in that same boat 2.5 years ago with less skills outside of trucking. But I did have a car. Try getting a dedicated that pays more but drives a little less. I think I was doing 1800-2100 miles a week. But I did do a little extra work a week unpaid. But that was hour or 2.
Or look for a local job and quietly rebuild your skills
