I was thinking maybe he'd face twisted, shadowy versions of himself formed from his psyche? After all, he seems to carry lots of regrets.

(Yes. Look the reason I am bringing up Carl Jung is because he is one for the few psychologist (let alone European psychologists) that tried to find an intersection between psychology and spirituality and not be either a hack or a quack. The man tried legitimately to figure out what was in the beliefs of his predecessors that could be used to guide the modern secular man.)

Demons more than once have in attempts to have revenge against him or acquire an agent on the physical world have sent manifestations of his evil acts and his negative emotions.

It's one of those things I would do a short comic or a one chapter story on. But not the subject of a whole novel.

Yes they almost do get him but he was indirectly trained for this as part of practicing mental magick. Without a central idea and a firm image of oneself ones souls can be lost to the ether when out of body or basically develop advanced schizophrenia. (Grandpa had that shit and Dad told me it sometimes got ugly.)

This sort of philosophical sorcery training and the insistence on trying to understand the importance of ones control of the mind when using magick is a relic of at minimum four-hundred years. It's something that became obscure when Star Swirl's teachings from thousand years ago for the common pony became more the definitive guide to modern magick.

Twilight is too naive and secular to get it yet. She is to grounded on the physical world.

In order for Twilight to get it she would need to go on a trip with some shrooms.
