Next chapter delayed a bit · 11:57pm Apr 25th, 2024
Hey all.
Field season really kicked into gear in early April, so I've been getting home exhausted pretty much every day. That and a bout of creative block means the next chapter of Phoenix-born is probably not going to be out until mid-May at the earliest.
On the plus side, in the last two weeks I've found at least seven ticks on me when I got back from the field (thankfully I found them before they got their faces into my skin). And almost stepped on two rattlesnakes. Tis the life of a field biologist.
Rattlesnakes? OMG, take care of yourself. 😬
GAH! I HATE TICKS! Never had problems with rattlesnakes, but had what looked like a black racker in my yard this spring.
Good luck, get rest, be safe.
I dread the idea that the Luna story will not come for more than a year.
Damn. Reminds me of the time I just laid down for a nap after working in a field briefly, and was on the cusp of sleep, when I felt a light pinch on my collarbone. Grabbed it and pulled and luckily the sucker hadnt gone all the way through. Tried crushing it with my finger but it refused to squish, had a fright about making sure that itd be the only one.

They're tough to kill, no doubt. Thing is, when you spend the entire day traipsing through brush, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of how many you get on you.

Unfortunately, paying bills comes before horse-words. If I could make this my job, I would. But, life's not so kind.

Thanks. Yea, they suck. I think I'm missing something in my brain, because when I see a snake, my reaction is "Oh, cool! I must take pictures!" Of course, I know how to stay out of striking range if the danger noodle is a venomous one.

They're not so bad, honestly. As long as you heed the warning, and keep out of striking range, you're fine. Most of them aren't going to come at you if you give them space.
