Favorite Super Robot attacks · 3:31am Nov 11th, 2023
Because I'm going through anime withdrawal due to having my internet via wi-fi hotspot and therefore must ration my data usage, and don't have access to my disk collection, here's a bunch of my favorite attack names from Super Robot anime, and the series they come from. This is by no means a complete list of all the attack names I like, but they're some of my favorites.
- Hanjuuryoku Storm (Translation: Anti-gravity storm) / Eng: Rainbow Beam - UFO Robot Grendizer
- Rust Hurricane - Mazinger Z
- Reflector Beam - Gargantia on the Veridous Planet
- Puncher Grind - Gaiking: The Legend of Daiku-maryu
- Pulsar Canon - Danguard Ace
- Jeeg Breaker - Kotetsu Jeeg / Kotetsushin Jeeg
- Strike Laser Claw - Zoids, New Century
- Sudden Impact - Big O
- Crash Intrude - Tekkaman Blade
I have little experience with mecha anime, which is kind of embarrassing when I'm part of two different active Lancer campaigns. Though my tactics in one are more accurately represented by Macross. Or Megas XLR.

*Voice gears up to do a short ted-talk on mecha generes*
There are two main sub-generes that exist in the mecha anime genera.
One is "real robot," which includes things like the MS Gundam franchise, Macross and Code Geass. Real robot tends to be more grounded, in that it tries to account for things like "why have the giant robots in the first place," "how does one supply them," "how does the presence of giant robots affect the world at large," etc. Conversely, Super Robot tends to be more bombastic, and less grounded. It errs more towards spectacle and flash without taking itself too seriously, though that's not a hard, fast rule.
In essence, real robot is, as a whole, more about hard sci-fi, gritty war drama, while super robot tends towards soft sci-fi, superheroics.
Using the two series you mentioned, Macross is real robot series, while Megas XLR is soundly a super robot series.
