The Update Before Christmas: G5 Rewritten · 4:11am Dec 21st, 2023
Christmas is approaching fast, and what I'm hoping, aiming and certain to bring to you soon, followers, is the end of The End of an Era, marking the conclusion of my Friendship is Magic series finale rewrite, the biggest project I've tackled and brought this far. Chapter 16 (Part 4 - Chapter 4) will be the last to cover my overhaul of The Ending of the End, and after that, an epilogue will follow to put a bow on top of the package. I doubt it's a spoiler on any level to mention that the epilogue will be a tweaking of The Last Problem that exists within The End of an Era's continuity. It'll be a necessary addition, since the original version of that episode does reference the events of the canon two-parter that preceded it in more than one scene. Those last two pieces of the story I want released pretty close to each other. Of course, when they arrive will depend on my pace. Stay tuned.
Here's the next thing I want to talk about. You may recall that some time ago, I said that after I was done with The End of an Era, I didn't want to do another large rewrite project like it again. That I would satisfied with doing this whole fan fiction of my idea of what the climatic finale of a T.V. show I love could've been and move on with closure achieved. Well, it remains true that I wouldn't want to do another rewrite... in the format where I fill it up with detailed sequences and full character dialogue, like a novel. What I've taken interest in for the future is something I'd fashion more as an outline where explaining the story path and providing storyboards takes precedence over characters' lines. This is what I have in mind for reimagining the current, base-breaking iteration of My Little Pony, G5, and it's core show, Make Your Mark.
I don't follow MLP G5 anymore, but from my experience, it hasn't been a disappointing show. I honestly kept my expectations pretty low for G4's immediate successor, even after G5's introductory film, A New Generation, turned out to be (in my opinion) pretty good. Nonetheless, what I watched, and what I've been seeing of, and hearing about, the episodes that have come out since I made my exit from the viewerbase, Make Your Mark has certainly been a puzzle. Besides continuity problems, it feels like it's having an identity crisis as a sequel series to it's predecessor, the characters were rewritten to more basic cartoon archetypes between the film and the show, it requires ancillary media (if only a web series of shorts) to provide an understanding of why major, recurring elements exist, the character drama doesn't come as naturally, and the tone has gone to more juvenile territory than Friendship is Magic has ever been to. Yet there are some interesting ideas from it's expanded lore and what A New Generation laid out for us that I hate to see either left sitting there, collecting dust, or used with all the pieces in the wrong places.
All of this is to say that my interest in creating a rewrite of My Little Pony: Make Your Mark has been piqued. With that is the prospect of a writing and drawing exercise that I could always use. It'd preserve some of the ideas from the official content, like Sparky, Opaline, Detective Zipp and the connections to the Friendship is Magic era, but it'd be a heavy overhaul as to make new stories with the G5 cast, using the end of the movie as a starting point. More drama, more action, more adventure, and more powers to explore. The simple title of this project?
My Little Pony: Re-Make Your Mark!
And no, I don't have the slightest intention of including the ruins of Canterlot or old man Discord from the comics. So, does this interest any of you? Do you think G5 is even worth salvaging and making into something extra special? If you have an answer, let me know.
Until the day I can bring Re-Make Your Mark to life, I am eager to finally wrap up The End of an Era in style after working on it the last couple of years. It's exciting to have the end of this road within my reach, and I hope the ride's been a fine one for the rest of you folks.
And so, another blog post concludes. Here be Stache Hand the Clutcher, out and about, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!
Yes, Re-Make your Mark is worth it! Absolutely!!!
As long as you include this (or a variation of it) once the New Mane Six are given the full context of Equestria being sent centuries, I’m game:
Also, will you include extended versions of the Tell Your Tale shorts in this remake?
