Editing audiobooks sucks · 8:24pm Nov 18th, 2023
Hey, time for my daily blog post, since I seem to be making them every day right now. Sorry about that, I don't mean to I'm just procrastinating! Updates on the LG print edition below.
So there's to parts to this print edition. For one, it needs to get more art, and hoo boy am I ever getting art. The final count of illusttrations in the book is forty-one assuming I get everything I set out to get and don't get any more! So yeah. That's a thing. I need to raise like $400 to get the rest, but I'll make that happen. This is not a plea for money or whatever, just laying fact out. The total artist count is looking to be like tenty-five, but that's yet to be determined exactly at this point. Total page count will be between 750 - 770 I think.
So what's this about an audiobook in the title of this blog post? Well, I recorded one of those for Looking Glass once, and I decided to do a new, better one. I didn't know what I was doing when I made the first LG audiobook, I do now. So I did the prologue, and man I'm giving up I think. It took 80 min between recording and editiing. For thirteen minutes of audio! Based on the length of the old audiobook and if I continue at this speed, it would take 110 hours to record and edit the whole thing. Soooo.... no. Not doing that. Like that's three weeks of full time labor that I am not getting paid for lmao don't underestimate this audiobook shit, kids!
Anyway, I'm going to get back to editing (words, not audio lmao), I don't know what I'm doing with that new prologue recording, but I may just replace the old prologue in the YouTube playlist at some point. In the meantime Satan help me, I am so tired of this ;-;
I'm learning to edit audio too! Honestly I actually enjoy it so far. The most frustrating thing is that I have a stutter that makes a lot of extra work when doing my own readings.

Kinda the same but it's my dyslexia for me I have to rerecord sentences all the time because I mess them up.
And this is why I just sigh when people ask me about Colony or even Axtara getting an audiobook. I've done the math, I've crunched the numbers. It's somewhere between $35,000 and $50,000+ to get an audiobook done for Colony even somewhat professionally. Assuming it all goes perfectly and there are no overages.
Audiobooks still take a surprising amount of work to produce.

Dang, those are some prices! How long are those stories, out of curiosity? Guessing they're sizable to be in that price range!

Colony is 335,000 words and some change. So definitely hefty. Axtara - Banking and Finance is only 135,000, so it would be cheaper, but it's still a significant investment monetarily.

For sure. Would be awesome to have audio versions but yeah not for those prices
