You know, I keep having dreams about My Little Pony recently. About the incredible potential this series and universe has, a potential which has partially been fulfilled. Not entirely though, which is understandable, as it's impossible to tell every story and develop every character properly with a cast as expansive as this one. Still however, I do wish some threads were expanded further.
I've been thinking about the Royal Sisters, their story and personalities and how incredibly complex yet relatable they could be if we just applied a bit of logic and speculation to expand what clues we've been given. I don't want to refer to it as a headcanon, cause what I mean is more just a natural evolution of what is indeed properly canon, but I do guess that is what it would technically be called. But what I mean is, these things aren't just "possible", they are (not always, but often) implied. Things like Luna's trauma after returning from banishment, difficulty with fitting in and thus attachment to her Sister as the only sure thing in the world, and yet a certain degree of fear towards her, at least at the beginning. Celestia's struggle to help Luna adapt and, most importantly, deal with her own decision to banish her to the Moon a thousand years ago.
And then we have what happened prior to the Lunar Banishment. Years of neglect, unfulfilled potential, ignorance on Celestia's part. All of this creating a split personality within Luna, only fueled and taken further by dark magic.
What I mean is, I love these characters so much, people. And we're so lucky that we got this show to begin with; it's something special. I love most of the comics too, as they add a lot of depth to such events and characters. To this day, I have yet to see a fictional character resonate with me more than Luna does, but honestly, Celestia is up there too. And so is the Mane Six, as well as Starlight or Trixie.
I'm glad we have so many talented artists and writers here in the fandom, you know? Expanding on the Princesses is what I myself have focused on in my works, primarily in Of Starships and Golden Armors; although yes, that does mostly concern Luna herself. That's just one of the many works we all have created though, and probably far from the best one; there are so many better authors on this site, after all.
I think I can see what the writers were trying to do with Pipp and Zipp in G5, both being sister princesses, but they just... aren't the same. They aren't immortal, they aren't traumatised, they don't emanate with the same amount of wisdom and grace, they don't rule the entire land. To put it simply... they are different characters, and maybe that's the point; Zipp is easily my favourite G5 pony. But it does still leave the Celestia/Luna void kind of unfilled. But oh well, we can't go on doing the same things over and over, can we...?
Hope you have a wonderful day,
-Lilia.
I haven't watched G5 yet, but hope they bring the Celestia and Luna back alive and well.
Celestia and Luna and their implied story from the first two episodes of Season 1 were my first clue that this show was something different. That potential for emotional depth in storytelling is rare, especially for what presents itself to be a show for little girls.

Me too. Granted, I've only watched the very beginnig of G5 so far, so I am quite a bit behind, haha. From being in this fandom though I know there seem to be some... flashbacks mentioning them later on, or something like that? I'm not completely sure, but I hope we get to physically see the Sisters as well.

It really was something special, indeed. And as the show progressed, it became visibly more mature in its themes and storytelling, exploiting that potential to a certain degree. It never abandoned its roots, don't get me wrong, but it squeezed out so much quality out of the seemingly silly concept of "little pastel horses living their lives". There are many reasons why I love FiM, but the story of the Royal Sisters is definitely up there.
