Those were two of the most harrowing hours in recent memory. · 10:35pm Aug 28th, 2023

But the new CPU cooler is on, and working. Certainly boosted my confidence in building. Seriously.

Lastly, to NZXT, maker of the Kraken 240 cooler I just pulled out of my system: a very genuine thank you. That thing lasted just over four years and died very noisily. If it ended up going to tech heaven silently, it would have been a lot harder to diagnose the problem.

Now, back to writing and gaming. I need to de-stress.

Dodged a bullet right there.

Well done!

Damn, nice work. I couldn't do any of that.

A moment of silence for the cooler we just lost.

a moment of silence for the screaming death it had?

Also, you DID apply thermal paste before putting on the new cooler... right?

The Corsair H100i Elite is one of those coolers that had paste pre-applied. I just had to take isopropyl alcohol and clean the heat plate of the processor.

I am glad to hear that this went well. Have you confirmed that the CPU is okay?

At least the pump didn't die while your computer was running unattended.

just checking, I'd scream if I replaced the cooler only to forget TP and fry the chip anyways.

It's been on for about five hours now, it games, and it idles around the mid-high 40's.

The amount of these that I have had to replace has made me go right back to air coolers. I do love how clean they make things look but for a daily driver pc they really don't provide any benefit over a tower that never needs replaced.

That was my aim today, but the ONE air cooler they had in stock wasn't able to be found.

I'm starting saving for a new PC on this next check, and it will be air cooled.

Not just that, it'll be ugly as fuck, too.

All. Noctua. Fans.

Everywhere.

I had a Corsair H80i last about 7yrs on my old X99 build with a i7-5960x.

In my 25yrs of PC building and repair (3yrs recent-ish spent working at MicroCenter as Technician), I have rarely seen well made, AIO Liquid cooler fail. There are some cheapy ones out there though. How rough you are with them also can shorten lifespan. Never had any of my personal owned Corsair models die. Oldest one a H80i lasted nearly 7yrs in a server use desktop that ran nearly all the time, before i upgraded when did new build. Air coolers, simple and work well, in cases with proper strong airflow, and in environments where ambient temperatures do not get too high.

The pumps have never actually failed they just slowly run out of water. I live in a dry environment so that's more to blame than the construction quality.
If I'm going back to water I want a loop I can clean and refill so essentially a custom loop. But I really can't justify that cost when a tower works just as well and I can put that ~1000$ into better parts.
