Gender/pronounce and localization · 5:52am Jun 19th, 2023

So, in my short "carrier" as translator, I stumble upon gender and pronounce problems at least twice:

First time, when i was working (currently freezed) on "Fallout Equestria". There was moment, when 2 raiders was attacking Littlepip, and author refer to each of them as "they", only to refer to each as "she" later, so turns out, it was 2 female raiders. And here is catch: Ukrainian (and Russian) doesn't work in that way. You can't slap "they" (as in English) and call it a day, because we don't really have this "they" concept in our languages. I need to apply correct gender to words, in 95% cases it's male or female. So, since i didn't know 2 raiders genders, i continued to translate as "2 male raiders". And only to be stopped later, when author casually started to refer to each one as "she" and "her". So i was forced to re-translate this part of text with correct words. Later, i dive into Russian translation of this book just to see, how it's translator done it, and there, author also was having 0 idea, what gender was supposed to be there, so they used "he" for each raider. And they, probably, also later saw casually dropped "she/her". They probably shouted "blyat" (fuck) because of that! And, instead of me, they just simple leave it as it (Laziness, my beloved!), since it was making 0 difference in story, and this characters died shortly after anyway. If that translator somehow reads it, я теж на ці граблі ступив!

And second time, happened like yesterday. Long Road to Friendship. There was moment, when Sunset get some plushy toy of unicorn. And Pinkie later refer to it as "she", when before Sunset and Pinkie herself didn't used specific pronounce word, when talking about toy. So, author build here interesting moment, using pronounces and that's cool!
But here is deal: word "toy" (іграшка) has female pronounce in Ukrainian. So i translated this moment, using female pronounce, until i stop and started to think "Why it is matter here? Why it is so important here?". I was even thinking to remove that part, since it's not really that important, and since word toy use female pronounce anyway. But i rephrased it, avoiding using pronounces at all (it harder then you think!). Now this part become little awkward and, even tho i understand what and why author done there, this part, probably, will have MUCH less impact on reader, then original, simply because our languages works differently.

So, uh, if someone who writes fics reads this post, please, if possible, provide manual with your fics, where translators and readers can learn, what pronounce character use!
And while i'm half-joking, still, it would be nice somehow know pronounce for characters before translator start translating.
And i hope character doesn't use "they/them" kind of pronounces. Ukrainian (and yet again Russian) language doesn't really build around this kind of concept, at all, so trying to translate/adapt this kind of character (especially, if store heavily relies on pronounces) is like slapping your head on the wall. It's painful!

Anyway, thanks for reading my rant and have a great day.
