    Table of original characters

One of my goals in The Only Mark That Matters is to build a cast of original characters, especially around the palace, for Radish to interact with. To help the reader keep track of them all, I've started this handy table. Some of these characters may only get referenced in

Recipe: Black and Tan with Tannins, Black · 12:57am May 30th, 2023

Occasionally I'll invent a food or drink for The Only Mark that Matters and then wonder how well it would work in real life. I'm going to occasionally use this blog to post attempts to recreate recipes from the story.

First up is the Black and Tan with Tannins, Black, from chapter 60: The Community. It's a haphazard mixture of dark beer, light beer, red wine, and coffee. Radish wasn't impressed.

Recipe:
1. Get some dark beer, light beer, red wine, and coffee. The amounts don't matter. The coffee is best cold.

2. Mix them in a drinking glass. The ratio doesn't matter. Garnish with a radish to make it worse.

3. Drink it.

The verdict: It's okay. It's simple to make, but it's not special enough to really be worth the effort. The flavors of each ingredient come through pretty well. There are worse ways to while away a lazy afternoon in Midtown Canterlot's Arts and Entertainment District.

Next time: Can we crack the recipe for jalapeño chews?

“It’s okay.” Really? Here I was thinking it would taste gross, with the tartness of red wine and bitterness of coffee doing oddball things with the hops of beer.

Garnish with a radish, of course.

I do not drink, but this seems like something that could actually work if you deduced the proper ratios (and perhaps: the specific types of drinks that should be used). A quaint post; I am looking forward to the next one.

I have to wonder about the jalapeño chews. You thinking they'd be like dried fruit bites, or a gummy? Maybe some sort of fig bar situation?
So many spicy possibilities.

Will be adding this to the jungle juice
