Question of the Week #105 · 2:15pm May 11th, 2023

Hello everyone and welcome back to the question of the week.

It's early in the morning but I wanted to create this blog before I forgot.

Admittedly, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. While a part of me wants to create new story ideas, there is also a part of me that wants to just go back and finish many of the old story ideas that I have.

At the same time I'm trying to figure out what I might want to write for Halloween, which is coming up soon. Right now, I have an idea that I figured I'd share and inquire some things about.

I feel that there aren't very many stories involving Halloween (Nightmare Night) beach parties, so I would like to work this into one of my stories. I'm also thinking of maybe trying to revisit my Monster Mares and You format.

The concept is that the CMC, who are like young adults in this story, are hosting a Nightmare Night Beach Party at a lake outside of Ponyville, the reader has been invited to this party. However the twist is as follows, either:

  • Each of the CMC are secretly monster ponies.
  • Or the reader is secretly a monster pony themselves.

In the case of the latter, the idea would be that the reader lives near the lake and while being shy, manages to impress a member of the CMC who invites them to the party.

So the questions are as thus:

  1. Would you rather have the CMC be monsters or the reader?
  2. In the case of the former, what type of monsters mares would you have the CMC (preferably a different monster for each member of the CMC)?

That's it.

Thank you all and have a wonderful day.

I feel like I've read the CMCs being monsters once too many. I mainly blame that from reading the fic's kinda bad description years ago and made me stay away from such subgenre for a while. Nothing really interesting other than monsters being good at disguising as ponies and living amongst them for their whole life. Because of that description, it lost a lot of insteresting factors before even touching the first chapter.

I believe it was where Apple Bloom was one of the Blanks (Story of the Blanks game), Scootaloo is a changeling, and Sweetie Belle... is a warepony or something.

So this is a biased preference: the reader or main character should be the monster.

Honestly, for you? It depends how you handle the description. Might get me to change my tune~

As for monsters, it really depends on what defines as monsters and their interactions. For picking based on strengths, we could go with Sweetie Belle as a siren with that pretty voice, Scootaloo an equivalent of Hermes (read: he has wing motifs based on images), and Apple Bloom as an Everfree creature.

A halloween beach party. Sounds like a US thing. No clue what nuances would be against a costume house party.

But the lake near Ponyville. Now that is a very unused location by many writters here. I am keen to read what you might do to the place!

I prefer the narrator is a monster story, but there needs to be one more twist after the monster reveal.

The twist is that the CMC already knew and that's why you were invited.

Could Sweetie have been a robot? If so, I think the story you're talking about is Undead Robot Bug Crusaders.

To answer Robi's question, I think the idea of the CMC being non-ponies of some kind is used pretty often. The idea of the POV character being the monster sounds interesting, though. Especially since it let's us get into the character's head, read their thoughts, and see how they'd handle a potentially high stress environment.
