Writing: Pacing · 1:50am Aug 27th, 2013

I know nothing about pacing. I’m not even convinced that it’s a thing. If I’m reading a story and get bored, I don’t say the pacing is slow. I say it’s boring. That tells you more ways and more specific ways to fix it. If a story has two breathless action scenes in a row in a way that doesn’t work for me, like the opening to End of Ponies, I don’t say the pacing is too fast; I look for something that's missing.

It must be strong enough to be followed, yet not obvious. And you must eliminate extraneous movements that could be mistaken for leads.]

We're Number One, maybe · 1:25am Aug 19th, 2013

I pitched "The 8 Creepiest Things About My Little Pony" to Cracked.com. Found out 3 other people pitched the same idea in the same week. The editorial staff said that My Little Pony isn't popular enough to merit an entire article.

They must be on a different Internet than me. Google says:

"Star wars" (1977): About 163,000,000 results
"Harry Potter" (1997): About 132,000,000 results
"Star Trek" (1966): About 93,100,000 results
"Lord of the Rings" (1954): About 72,900,000 results

Why We Read · 2:10am Aug 16th, 2013

[Summary: Substantive works of fiction are "the only places where there was some civic, public hope of coming to grips with the ethical, philosophical, and sociopolitical dimensions of life that were elsewhere treated so simplistically".]

Readers want blood · 5:21am Aug 15th, 2013

You think our featured box is bad? 10 out of the 15 novels on the New York Times fiction hardcover bestseller list right now are thrillers/mysteries about grisly homicides/cults/terrorist plots.
