We're Number One, maybe · 1:25am Aug 19th, 2013

I pitched "The 8 Creepiest Things About My Little Pony" to Cracked.com. Found out 3 other people pitched the same idea in the same week. The editorial staff said that My Little Pony isn't popular enough to merit an entire article.

They must be on a different Internet than me. Google says:

"Star wars" (1977): About 163,000,000 results
"Harry Potter" (1997): About 132,000,000 results
"Star Trek" (1966): About 93,100,000 results
"Lord of the Rings" (1954): About 72,900,000 results
"My Little Pony" (2011): About 51,700,000 results

Look at the release dates, and you'll realize these numbers probably mean more webpages are being created each year referencing My Little Pony than any of the others. (Unfortunately Google won't give both hit count and past-year-only at the same time anymore.)

ADDED: Never mind. It looks like the Google hit counts underestimate the number of actual hits, and the underestimating is greater the higher the numbers are. So 163,000,000 might really mean 500,000,000. Probably some sort of pruning of results filters out hits more aggressively the more of them that there are.

ADDED: I retracted my pitch from Cracked, and left instead a polite message saying it makes no sense to work for people who are trying to harm me and my friends.

maybe they meant that the only people to read an article about MLP would either be bronies, who would hate the article, or people who hate the show... who, yes, probably would hate the article too.

Cracked.com usually are dickish about MLP. For one thing, when Equestria Girls was first leaked, they said most bronies waited in glee for the eventual release of the film (because we're all neckbeard pedophiles HUE HUE HUE :ajbemused:). When the actual fact of the matter was that most bronies weren't looking forward to the movie at all (this was when it was first talked about and everyone thought it would suck and destroy the fandom). If you're gonna make fun of fans of a show for little girls, get your frickin' facts right.

I would like to know what the "8 Creepiest Things About MLP" are, personally. Part of me is ready to be offended, and part of me wants to know how you narrowed it down to eight.

1294149 It will probably show up here eventually.

1294144 Oh, wow, I just read their article on Equestria Girls. They're complete assholes.

1294158
Yeah, you'd think guys who used to be nerds (maybe not Sorren, but a few of them) and usually talk about stuff that isn't accepted as normal by most of society (fans for Star Wars, Star Trek, indie movie fans, comic book fans, and so on) would be a little more understanding about fans of something considered weird by everyone else. Also, read their article about creepiest stuff about MLP. They talk about Fallout: Equestria. They're super assholes there.

1294149
I can make a list right now, but I'm not sure if it's the show itself or just the fandom. If just the fandom, I already know most of that creepiest from other fandoms as well, so they wouldn't surprise me much.

What if you narrowed the search results by "last update" in Advanced Search? Would that help?

1294169 Nope; you don't get the number of hits when you use 'last update' or other advanced features.

I'd read that article. :rainbowhuh:

Though seriously if four people pitch the same topic in the same week, and its during the show's fallow period, you'd think they might want to re-examine their notions of what's popular.

1294167 The funny thing is that they're sticklers about fact-checking, but apparently they don't mind if you choose a set of grossly unrepresentative facts to tell a big lie out of little facts.

1294176

If you hit the "Search tools" button after making an Advanced Search, it shows the number of results. At least, that's what it did for me.

Like for "Star wars", I get

About 158,000,000 results

After narrowing it down I get

About 121,000,000 results

I thought, among those of geeky pursuits, there would be vastly less "Hur. Hur. Hur. Lookit that guy enjoying something not commonly enjoyed. Let's mock & belittle."

The internet, almost in its entirety, has been something of a rude awakening. Only I keep awakening, and the nightmare never seems to bottom out. It's rather like the fate of Burgess in Sandman, really. :facehoof:

What's odd is they already did something not too dissimilar a while back...
Only it was just "4 Insane Pieces of Fan Art" Which includes, of course, Rainbow Factory and Fo:E and Porn

But that makes literally no sense. I can't go anywhere without a pony nowadays.

1294184 Hmm, you're right. But I get 145,000,000 results for Star Wars in the past year, and 67,600,000 in the past month. For My Little Pony, I get 21,500,000 in the past year and 8,120,000 in the past month.

So, never mind. The numbers I posted are misleading. There's some cap around 100,000,000 above which the numbers are wrong.

Is this like the 301-view bug in YouTube, maybe?

Cracked are the epitome of white, liberal shit-headedness.
Asshole does not begin to describe their rationalizing of the mainstream, or their unfunniness, or their ignorance of everything scientific, philosophical, psychological and historical, or their patronizing attitude.

You are better off ignoring them.

((Am I nonsensically bitter that they didn't mention Scootabuse or me in their MLP fan art article? Yes. Does that detract from how they're everything that is wrong with college students and the internet? No.))

As much as I generally enjoy Cracked, the only thing I ever saw on the site about FiM was about how Bronies are a bunch of basement dwellers who look at horse porn. It struck me as a bit odd seeing that on the site, especially since it seemed to be being played straight faced. I haven't looked for anything else MLP centered on Cracked, but admittedly, I do not visit it that much. Generally TVtropes sucks all my time away. :derpytongue2:

I actually think that it would have been a fine subject for an article on Cracked, given they talk about far weirder things on a regular basis.

I suspect they're just being a bit silly.

ADDED: I retracted my pitch from Cracked, and left instead a polite message saying it makes no sense to work for people who are trying to harm me and my friends.

I smell overreaction! :pinkiehappy:

1294561 Did you read their other articles mentioning My Little Pony and bronies? They're cruel and malicious.

It's hard to tell the difference between taking a stand when others aren't, and being an asshole.

1294604

They have another article talking about how nerds today don't know how good they have it, and that to be a nerd doesn't just mean liking video games or comics or star wars or fantasy novels 'cause most of that crap's mainstream now. At the end of it, Bronies are mentioned as one of the few "true" nerd groups around today because we're one of the few to be ostracised for what we enjoy.

So, you know, not every single thing they say about the fandom is bad.

Amit doesn't have feelings or understand how anyone else does
so explaining to him how you might be offended by something is a bit like explaining why you're in love to a dead squirrel
or a living, teenage squirrel who's candidly masturbating the whole time

things

and that to be a nerd doesn't just mean liking video games or comics or star wars or fantasy novels 'cause most of that crap's mainstream now.

I think someone got nerds confused with hipsters :D
