nice job! That is what i always wondered about HECU, had they deployed before or solely for Black Mesa, given their name and such? I mean, as a special unit, would make sense their members are experienced.
and i noticed only this

OK so I've read this story. It's OK so far. The wheels kind of spin in place for a bit at some parts; particularly when Sheppard is explaining the US govt and stuff to Autumn Breeze; wasn't really necessary to explicitly step through all that. At first I thought you were going to contrast Sheppard's love for his country and government with what happened at Black Mesa; for a second I thought you would have the kirin point out the contradiction and force him to confront it. Certainly Sheppard would not have yet had time to really process what happened and integrate it into his worldview. But you didn't go that route which is kind of a shame but I don't really know where you're taking this fic so whatever.
Oh and you have Sheppard claim his govt abandoned him. Actually the military was pulled out before the nuke was set off. Sheppard is well aware the G-man prevented him from being able to leave with the rest of the soldiers; I don't think he would blame the govt for that. Plus they pulled out because the mission was aborted; it was an acknowledgement they were losing too many soldiers and it was an attempt to minimize further losses. They nuked the entire place instead of trying to salvage the facility and lose good soldiers in the process. So you might want to reassess Sheppard's logic there. He can still be mad at the G-man for that, and the govt for other reasons.
I also noticed Sheppard seems to know a bit more about what happened at Black Mesa than I'd think he did; been a while since I played through Op4 though.
Not really sure where the story is going. Right now the focus seems to be on healing Sheppard and building a new life with the kirin, and also uncovering Rain Shines' secrets over time as he does. The weird appearance of the boombox is definitely odd and hints towards some interesting story possibilities there. Are there more Black Mesa artifacts to be found around? Dangerous? Benign? Is something similar responsible for the prevalence of Japanese culture in the kirin village? (Normally this is kind of a "well fiction has to pull alien culture from somewhere" thing but since you call it out I assume you're going to do something with it.) Anyway I'm looking forward for more of that storyline, and hoping you just didn't make a boombox come out of thin air as a one-time thing.
Better hope Sheppard isn't actually going home. If he knew what was coming according to HL lore he wouldn't want to go back. Best case scenario for him is he dies in the Seven Hour War, never knowing humanity loses it. No retirement after serving his country for him. All other scenarios get progressively darker for him. Only way things could go good would be, ironically, if G-man steps in to put "the right man [him] in the wrong place".
I hope to see more of this story soon.
Lastly, I had this potential scene pop into my head and it's my head canon now. So I have to share it. Enjoy.
Another night, another nightmare. The same twisted halls of Black Mesa, the same military VOX blaring incoherent troop orders over the Black Mesa PA system. The same endless onslaught of aliens who I would barely push through until I encountered... HIM. Tonight would, presumably, be more of the same. At least I wasn't waking up with a gun to my head these days.
I stopped at a corner. Quiet squealing sounds came around the bend. Maybe a dozen of those dog things, sleeping. The LOUD ones. I hated those, Good thing that, first time I found one, I had figured out a "shoot first, shoot later" policy with anything vaguely alien I encountered or I'd probably be deaf.
I leaned against wall quietly, and peered around the corner to verify what I was up against.
To my surprise, there were no dogs. They were still quadrupeds though, still a pack of them just like those dogs seemed to stay in, and they were all sleeping. They looked familiar. Vaguely pony shaped, fluffy manes that cascaded down the sides of their heads and joined in what almost looked like beards. Long, curved, red horns on the top of their heads. Scales that started from the tips of their muzzles and went over the heads and down their backs...
Wait, they were kirin. For a moment I had forgotten. What were kirin doing in Black Mesa?
One of them woke up and looked my way, I ducked back around the corner but was too late.
"Adrian?"
It was Autumn Blaze. I looked back around the corner. She was smiling, eyes glowing with curiosity as she got to her hooves. Her question had awoken the others...
Wait, something was odd about them.
"Adrian?"
"Adrian?"
"Adrian?"
"Adrian!"
"Adrian?"
They were ALL Autumn Blaze. Right. Dream.
They all got up. Then, they all started running at me.
As a professional, unless explicitly ordered, I never retreat, even in my dreams. Technically, I was moving forward, in the opposite direction, in search of victories elsewhere. As I lacked a proper command structure now, I had to improvise.
"Adrian! Tell us more about this 'Walmart' thing?"
"Why does the 21st amendment appeal the 18th? What happened to tradition?"
"How many licks DOES it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?"
"What's in the G-man's briefcase?"
"Am I your waifu?!? Or is it Rain Shines?"
"What's that 13th amendment talking about? I'm sure that won't be awkward to explain to us!"
"Why do rocks float in Xen?"
"But why '42'?"
As the first one finally caught up and pounced me like a ravenous cheetah, I wondered if the dogs would have actually been worse, and I resolved to stop eating strange fruits the kirin offered me right before going to bed.
