After Luna's Banishment, Celestia was heart broken. During her walk through Canterlot's Gardens, she was visited by a strange gold and red clad unicorn stallion that had appeared within Equestria. Only two words of who he was. "Emperor's Companion".
So...Our little bat pone is somehow better at fighting than millenium old princesses? I'm not sure how I feel about this...That seem...unrealistic...Especially when a few other stories that I have read put the princesses in armies wiping category with Celestia being the dramatic one and Luna being the boring one. Unrealistic because her skill just seem to be above average, not god-send/chosen-one/Very talented/...But, meh. It's not really a turn off for me.
7136314 There can be reasoning for this, even despite the amount of fanfics that I too have read that usually have the Princesses excelling at combat, a possible explanation being that Nighting Gale could simply be superior to the princesses in pure melee combat. While the Princesses might be literal gods on the battlefield, without the use of their unicorn/Alicorn magic, they might be more power focused whereas Gale's speed and finesse as a Batpony, as well as smaller size, would make her much more nimble and potentially dangerous in 1-on-1 engagements.
Now, a fact remains, Sun Guard *used* magic in the fight against Nighting Gale. This means that when training against the princesses as well, outside of being able to levitate their weapons, they could also use their magic (probably) in full capacity. This makes it seem ridiculous now that Celestia could only hit him once, out of all the times they've sparred, while Luna could not at all... Now, an argument could be made that Luna could still be rusty but it's been months since her return, the fact that she still can't land a hit is staggering...
Coupled with Gale being able to hit Sun Guard twice, in their *first* fight... This makes sense. She was a captain, recently became the High General of The Lunar Guard. Its mentioned that she's young, (though we don't have a specific age on exactly *how* you but I'm thinking 21 at least, no younger than 20) so she's a fucking *prodigy* in the art of combat. If it weren't for the fact that the 3 Unicorns caught her 100% off-guard (that silence spell that was mentioned a chapter or two ago being the cause is a major plot hole btw) then she probably would have killed all 3 of them before they could even get their dicks hard, or at the very least mortally incapacitated them. Being able to land a hit or two on Sun Guard on her first try is impressive.
The fact that none of that is really emphasized though, the fact that she *somehow* knocked Sun Guard off his fore-hooves with a strike to the head despite it (if I'm reading the fight correctly) being the super well armored portion (not his chin) and him wearing what I am assuming to be the heaviest armor in all of Equestia, AND the fact that he somehow sees her as being a more challenging fighter than the princesses...
It's unbelievable.
None of this is believable. So many potential plot points ignored, many that can explain so much. Unless Nighting Gale turns out to secretly be the Princess of punching super fucking hard or her talent *somehow* has the ability to greatly magnifying the force of her blows to a frighteningly monstrous degree, then a lot of what I'm reading is just scenarios that the Author wanted to happen... Which is fine, this is how inspiration for stories comes about a lot and can lead to something great, but it needs the proper follow-up when leading up to the moments so they seem believable, or at least a proper follow-through to explain wtf just happened.
So, uh, yeah... Long rant reply to a comment that is 5 years old on a story that's been dead for 5 years... Guess all I wanted to say was that I agree with your statement on how this seems unrealistic, want to point out that this could all be very well possible, but sadly am lamenting how poor execution is hampering in what my opinion is a *very* strong concept that will never get a rewrite/rework to fix it... :[
Luna blushed, looking at the ground. “Our sister has only managed to score a single hit on him, while we?” She started to shift around on her hooves, obviously embarrassed. “We never managed to even touch him.” This revelation caused Nighting Gale to go wide eyed and slacked jawed.
well that was a stroke of luck. I'm going to need a drink.
But it never came, and she noticed he wasn’t staring at her like some righteous crusader, her fear induced thoughts making the mare’s mind run wild, but only gave her an inquisitive look. Nighting Gale summoned up what courage she had left, and finished explaining. “W-We do not need to drink blood, to sustain ourselves. Fruits can do that for us. To drink blood, is a bat pony’s last resort. In all honesty, if a Bat Pony drinks somepony’s blood… It is because they have suffered a near fatal wound, or are dying from a fatal one.”
It's sapient!
Damn it!

Oh god, you're turning Nighting Gale into a Seras Victoria aren't you?
