A Different Kind of Pain

The lunch room. It's a place where drama starts, it's a place where gossip is heard. It's a place where food is eaten, and it's a place where you get a break from the stress of school. But for a group of girls it's just a place to hang out, chat, and just catch up on what's going on in each others' lives. One of the girls from the table, Sunset Shimmer, didn't join in on the conversation, she sat their poking at her food and worrying about her own jumbled thoughts. Her jacket sleeves were longer than usual and her friends have been wondering why but didn't bother to ask her.

Sunset jumped slightly as she felt someone gently nudge her, it was her friend Fluttershy. "Oh, um, I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you, I was just worried about you because you haven't said anything and you keep mumbling things,'' she said in her usual timid voice.

All the girls were now looking at her, some with faces of concern and others with a worried expression."I-I'm fine... just lost in thought that's all,'' Sunset forced a smile looking to all her friends.

''Ok, but why are you wearing longer sleeves on your jacket, I thought you liked the one we bought you for your birthday that had short sleeves,'' Fluttershy asked with curiosity.

"Yeah, I do, it's just that it gets a little chilly in my other classes, so I decided to wear this one for now,''Sunset hoped that that would end the conversation but Rainbow had other plans.

"Come on, Sunset, what's been bugging you? I mean all this week you've barely said anything during lunch and your always zoned out whenever we talk to you. Is something wrong?" Rainbow asked while resting her cheek on her fist.

"Dash, like I said, I'm fine I just..." Sunset's eyes darted around the lunchroom as she tried to find a way to get out of this conversation, " ... I just need to go to the bathroom, I'll see you guys later ok,'' Sunset grabbed her stuff and was about to leave when someone grabbed her wrist.

"One more thing before you go darling, we're having a slumber party at Pinkie's house tonight and we were wondering if you were going to attend since you didn't last time,'' Rarity asked with a hopeful smile.

Sunset quick pulled her hand out of Rarity's grasp." Uh, yeah, sure I'll be there."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

"Pinkie Promise," Pinkie yelled while staring Sunset dead in the eye.

Sunset sighed." Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye." Sunset said while doing the motions with her hands. She really didn't want to go to the slumber party, but she just made a Pinkie Promise and Pinkie will hunt you down no matter where you are if you break one.

Sunset waved 'bye' to her friends with a smile, but once she was out the lunchroom doors her smile faded. As Sunset started walking toward the lockers her phone vibrated, signaling that she had received a new text. She rolled her eyes, she already knew what the message was about. Taking out her cell phone she scrolled down until she found the text.

'Demon Freak,'it read.

Sunset didn't get mad, no, not at the least. She actually thought she deserved all these hurtful messages for what she had caused at the Fall Formal. Sometimes the guilt and embarrassment wasn't enough to cause her pain, so she had to cause herself pain.

Sunset found herself not walking to the lockers but walking to the bathroom. She locked herself in one of the stalls and reached into one of her pockets. Her fingers wrapped around a sharp object and pulled it out. It was a blade that was usually meant for sharpening pencils but can be used for something far more sinister. Sunset placed the blade to her wrist and put pressure. Biting her lip she put more and more pressure on the blade until she saw tiny beads of blood, Sunset sighed with relief closing her eyes. A creak of a door was heard and Sunset's eyes widened, she heard footsteps coming and they stopped right in front of her stall.

Someone knocked on the stall door." Sunset, are you in there?" A very familiar voice said.

Sunset looked from her stall door to her still bleeding wrist." T-Twilight? What are you doing here? Aren't you suppose to be in Equestria on royal business or something.''

"Well I've been working so much this past two weeks so Princess Celestial told me I could take a break. And then Pinkie messaged me in the book and invited me over for a sleepover. She said that you let her borrow your book, that was really sweet by the way,'' Twilight replied calmly.

'Wait what!!'Sunset searched through her backpack for her cutie mark emblazed book and sure enough, it wasn't there. She made a mental note not to leave her stuff alone with Pinkie Pie anymore.

When Twilight didn't hear Sunset speak she continued." When I was walking towards the library to go check it out I saw you run in here so I came to see if you were okay."

And there it was again the," Are you okay?,'' question that Sunset was asked everyday by her friends. She dreaded that question every time she heard it. First of all, she wasn't ok. Second of all, she couldn't tell her friends how she really felt because she didn't want them worrying about her.

"Y-Yeah I'm okay. Can you wait outside? I'll be out in a sec." Once Sunset heard the bathroom door close she grabbed some pieces of toilet paper and wiped the beads of blood that were forming on her cut. She placed the blade back in her pocket and started washing her hands. Once they were dry she pulled her sleeves down so they covered her wrist. Sunset headed out the door and was greeted with a hug which she returned.

"So how long are you planning to staying here,'' Sunset asked once Twilight released her from the hug.

"Well I might stay here for a few days so I can spend time with you guys,'' Twilight replied while shifting from one foot to the other.

"That's co-,"Sunset was cut off as the bell rang signaling that lunch was over and everyone should return to their proper classes. Sunset sighed," Sorry Twilight I got to go, I'll see you later, bye." Sunset waved 'bye' to Twilight as she ran to her next class.

✳✳✳

Sunset layed down by the statue of Canterlot High waiting for her friends to get out of class. She was too fascinated in the clouds to notice someone step over her.

"Hey," it was Twilight.

"Oh, uh, hey Twilight," Sunset propped herself up on one of the sides of the statue as Twilight sat next to her.

"I didn't expect you to be here, I thought you had class,'' Twilight said while tilting her head to the side.

'Why do you have to be so damn cute Twilight',''Yeah, but, seventh period is my free period so I usually just hang around the statue until school is over.''

"Oh, ok, so what do you do to pass the time?'' Twilight asked casually.

''Well usually I read a book but I forgot to bring one from my apartment and I've already read all the books from the schools library. I would go on my phone but...'' Sunset reached into her jacket pocket, took out her phone, and showed it to Twilight,'' ...Pinkie wasted all my battery playing Five Night's at Freddy's.''

As Sunset was holding out her phone her jacket sleeves rode up a bit. Twilight's gaze landed on Sunset's wrist and she gasped when she saw numerous cuts on it.

"What's the matter?'' Sunset asked oblivious to the situation,'' Is something wrong?''

Twilight grabbed Sunset's arm, turned it over, and examined her wrist. "What happened to your wrist!?''

A bead of sweat ran down Sunset's forehead as she realized what Twilight was talking about. "Oh, um, that, well you see what had happened was, um, m-my landlord's cat scratched me when I was about to pet it.''

'' That doesn't seem very logical, you see, the substance of a cats paws is made of...'' Sunset sighed with relief as the subject was changed and Twilight was rambling on about minerals and acids.

After about half an hour or so of small talk the bell rang signaling that school was over and students started flooding out the building. Sunset found her friends amongst the crowd and motioned for them to come over.

"So you guys ready to parrrty,'' Pinkie yelled excitedly. "Everyone is coming riiiiight,'' she said looking directly at Sunset.

Sunset rolled her eyes playfully. "Don't worry Pinkie I'll be there. Does anyone need a ride to the slumber party?'' She asked.

"I need one if you don't mind,'' Twilight said which prompted Rarity, Applejack, Rainbow, Fluttershy, and Pinkie to giggle quietly, and Twilight raised an eyebrow.

"Nah it's alright,'' Sunset said as she and Twilight headed towards Sunset's vehicle, a black motorcycle. "First we're going to head to my apartment so I can take a shower and get some clothes.''

"Um, are you sure this contraption thing is safe?'' Twilight pointed to the motorcycle as it roared to life.

Sunset didn't answer the question, instead, she grabbed two helmets from seemingly out of nowhere and handed one of them to Twilight. She squeezed her head in the helmet, it was a little loose.

"What's this plastic thing in front of my eyes?''

''Visor,'' Sunset said while flipping what must have been the visor up.

"Oh, right,'' Twilight smiled sheepishly.

Sunset got on top of her motorcycle and patted the seat behind her. Twilight hesitantly took a step forward and got on the bike.

"Where do I hold on?'' Twilight asked looking around.

"Well, you have two choices, either you can hold on to that bar,'' Sunset pointed to the little bar that was sticking out at the back of the motorcycle, ''or you can hold on to me.''

Twilight looked at the tiny bar on the motorcycle but ultimately made her choice and hesitantly wrapped her arms around Sunset's waist. "C-Can you start off slow, I don't even know how this thing works.''

"Fine, I'll start off slow.'' Sunset said with a mischievous grin. Sunset drove out of the CHS parking lot and started driving at a slower speed than usual. Once Sunset felt Twilight's hands loosen their grip on her she knew that Twilight was caught off guard so she started speeding up.

''S-Sunset, what are you doiIIIII,'' Twilight couldn't finish her sentence since Sunset was now going at full speed, weaving around cars, and leaning. Twilight started grasping Sunset's waist unable to see the blur of the world going past her.

Sunset, on the other hand, was having the time of her life. She could feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins and she laughed every time she felt the vibrations of Twilight's muffled screams against her back.

It wasn't long before Sunset saw her apartment in the distance and started slowing down allowing Twilight to calm down.

"See that wasn't so bad,'' Sunset said as she got off the bike and removed her helmet.

Twilight slowly got off the bike, her legs still shaking, and took off her helmet revealing her frazzled hair prompting Sunset to laugh. She looked at Sunset with an unamused look and slightly punched her arm only making Sunset burst into another fit of giggles in which Twilight soon joined.

"I guess it was a little fun,'' she admitted.

Twilight and Sunset walked into the apartment. It was a pretty decent sized apartment, there was a living room with a couch and TV, there was a kitchen, there was a bathroom, and finally there was Sunset's bedroom.

"I'm gonna go take a shower, there's food in the fridge and you can watch TV if you want.'' Sunset said as she entered her room and closed the door. Twilight wondered if there was another bathroom in Sunset's bedroom because she didn't come back out for a while. Twilight's suspicion was answered when she heard water hitting a drain.

Twilight removed her backpack from her shoulders and placed it next to the couch in the living room. She plopped herself down on the couch and grabbed the remote that was on the armrest and examined it. She turned it over looking at the buttons and even tried to take it apart but failed.

"So, watcha doing,'' Sunset said as she sat down on the armrest.

Twilight jumped in surprise and eyed Sunset up and down. She was already fully clothed with her leather jacket on and a bag slung over her shoulder,''How are you already done so quickly?''

"Quickly? Twilight its been half an hour and I would've taken longer but Pinkie has already sent me like twenty messages,'' Sunset rolled her eyes, "Anyway, you ready to go or what?''

''Oh, yeah let's go,'' Twilight said as set the TV remote down, got her stuff, and headed out the door.

"Hey Twilight,'' Sunset said as she locked the door to her apartment,'' Do you think you can put my bag in your backpack.''

''Yeah, sure, let me see it,'' Twilight grabbed the bag and somehow made room for it in her little backpack.

✳✳✳

"You promised that you would go slow this time,'' Twilight said as she shakily got off the motorcycle once again.

"I promised...'' Sunset laughed,''... But I didn't Pinkie Promise.''

Twilight rolled her eyes, took off the helmet she was wearing, and handed it to Sunset.

Sunset and Twilight walked up to Pinkie's front door and knocked on it.

A girl with purplish-gray hair and tealish eyes answered. "You two must be Pinkie's friends,'' she said in an emotionless voice. "She's upstairs with the others, follow me.''

A knock from Pinkie's door was heard and soon opened. "Oh, hey Maud what are you doing here.''

"Some of your friends are here,'' Maud stepped out of the way to reveal both Sunset and Twilight.

" 'Kay, thanks Maud,'' Pinkie motioned for Sunset and Twilight to come in.

Twilight took off her backpack and sat on the bed but Sunset stayed at the door. "Hey, Twilight, throw me my duffle bag.'' Twilight searched through her bag and when she found what she was looking for she tossed Sunset's belongings to her. "Thanks, I'm gonna go change guys.''

Sunset then proceeded to head to the bathroom and closed the door. She looked through her bag, she had her pajamas, phone and a book. The only thing that seemed to be missing was... her blade. Sunset groaned in frustration, how had she forgotten the most important thing that she needed. She knew she was going to need it especially for tonight.

'Well, I guess I'm just going to have to use something else,'Sunset thought. At least she remembered to bring long sleeved pajamas. If she had forgotten them then she was going to come out of the bathroom with her jacket still on and that was bound to get her some questions from her friends.

As Sunset started to get dressed her phone vibrated. "Great, something to make my day even better,'' she mumbled sarcastically under her breath while picking up her phone.

'You don't fucking belong here. The world would be better off without you. Why don't you just save people some time and kill yourself already.'Sunset's grip loosened on her phone and it fell onto the tile. She slid down the wall and started sobbing. People have been sending her hurtful messages, but none have been this bad. They've taken it to far and Sunset was starting to believe that she really didn't deserve to live. She started to violently tremble but tried to calm herself down nonetheless. If she stayed in the bathroom for too long her friends would become curious and come check on her. Sunset grabbed the edge of the bathroom sink and got up. She looked at herself in the mirror, her hair was sticking out in some places and her eyes were bloodshot red from all the crying she had done.

Sunset slowly started to get dressed. She waited a few minutes in the bathroom to allow her eyes to go back to normal and to smooth out her hair a little. When she was finished she grabbed her stuff and her phone - that wasn't cracked remarkably - and headed back to Pinkie's room. Sunset opened the door to her friends' room only to have Pinkie jump right in front of her face.

"You ready to have a fun night,'' Pinkie said enthusiastically. "We're gonna drink hot cocoa, and watch movies, a-and we're going to drink hot cocoa, and eat junk food, and we're gonna drink hot teeea.''

"You just said hot cocoa twice.''

"I know right!''

Sunset gave a weak smile. She was going to try to enjoy this night with her friends fore she knew it was going to b the last time she would see them.

✳✳✳

Sunset woke up early the next morning. It was half past seven and everyone else was asleep. She quietly got up, gathered her stuff, and put on her leather jacket. Sunset tiptoed over her sleeping friends. First it was Applejack and Rainbow Dash, who fell asleep while playing video games. Then it was Fluttershy, who was hugging a stuffed alligator to her chest. Sunset didn't have to worry about Pinkie or Rarity since they were both sleeping atop Pinkie's bed, Rarity at the head of the bed and Pinkie was sleeping in a weird position at the foot of the bed. And finally she stepped over... Twilight. Her hair was in a braid and she looked... cute, she almost looked peaceful except when she started to shiver here and there. Sunset lifted the blanket over Twilight and left.

✳✳✳

Twilight awoke to the smell of pancakes. Twilight got up and noticed that no one was in the room so she decided to head downstairs.

Rainbow, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Applejack were in the living room watching TV and Pinkie was in the kitchen making breakfast. The only one who seemed to be missing was, Sunset Shimmer.

"Where's Sunset?'' Twilight asked when she entered the living room.

Applejack looked over her shoulder and shrugged, "Don't know sugarcube, ah' was the first one tuh' wake up and she was already gone.''

"Ooo, maybe I should call her and ask if she wants to come to the mall with us later,'' Rarity said with a hint of excitement.

Twilight smiled, and sat next to Rarity as her friend dialed Sunset's number.

✳✳✳

Sunset set her phone down on her bathroom sink and opened her medicine cabinet. She lined up each medicine bottle on the counter. Sunset's phone started to ring, and judging buy the ringtone it was one of her friends, which only made what Sunset was about to do harder. She didn't bother locking her bathroom door, she needed at least someone to find her body, if anyone even bothered to look for her.

Sunset took a handful of pills and swallowed them with a gulp of water. Handful, swallow, handful, swallow, she repeated this until she started to feel dizzy. Sunset layed herself down on the ground, she didn't want to collapse while still standing up and hurt herself even more.

She just... wanted... it... to... all... go... away...
