Prologue

"Alright Dan, just sit perfectly still" the nurse said as she handed me a small black squeeze pump. "If you have an emergency just squeeze this. I'll be in the next room watching." She smiled and made sure I was resting correctly on the table before sliding it into the bright cave that was the MRI. I watched her walk into the next room and shut the door behind her. As soon as she hit a button there was a low buzzing noise that engulfed the room. A weak heat creep up my previously injured leg, forcing me to remember the incident.

TWO MONTHS AGO

"HIYAH! HIYAH!" I threw out a jab followed by a high punch, my gi was making popping noises as I threw my punches. I was training to get my red belt in my karate class. After this I would only have brown and black belts before I graduated. All I had to do was complete this form and I pass. "HIYAH!" Jumping in the air I pull my knee to my chest before spinning and swinging my foot around. The technique was nearly flawless. I grinned to myself, knowing this was the final move I had to do. Upon landing I realized I was leaning too far forward. I leaned back a little bit but it was too late, I landed on the ball of my foot and slipped. An unholy loud pop and crunch was heard before I hit the ground face first, screaming my lungs out. Glancing down at where the assaulting sensation was coming from I saw my right kneecap had become dislocated, way too far off to the left. As all four instructors carefully picked me up and carried me to a bench outside of the mat I noticed it had begun to swell. When they put me down I screamed out again before blacking out.

PRESENT

Slowly the noises grew louder and louder, I was now silently thanking the nurse for giving me earplugs. I tensed up as the heat in my leg began growing hotter as the noise got louder. I closed my eyes and focused on what the nurse had said, telling me it would get a little warm and not to worry. Taking slow, deep breaths I waited for it to cool down, but it only grew worse.

After what felt like half an hour my leg felt like it was on fire. Tears began to form in my eyes as I felt the fire spread throughout my entire leg. Squeezing the pump as hard as I could I prayed it would be over soon, but the machine never stopped buzzing, the heat never stopped, and the nurse never responded. I looked over at the window separating us and noticed that there was an odd absence of human life there. Suddenly the heat spread upwards, engulfing the entirety of the right side of my body with invisible flames. I screamed out in pain, my vision dimming and all thoughts dying. I barely registered the buzzing had finally stopped and I was able to hear banging on the door. It flew off it's hinges and doctors came rushing in and began pulling me out of the machine. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, I could only sit there and watch as I was hooked up to a heart monitor and rolled down the halls on a bed with wheels. The whole time I was being rolled the fire continued to spread throughout the rest of my body.

The rest of my senses began to shutdown as well, I could no longer hear what anyone was saying and my whole body was going numb, except for that bloody heat. After an eternity we reached the operating room. My shirt was cut open and I could barely hear a faint, yet constant, beep noise of the heart monitor next to me. Within an instant everything shut off. I couldn't see, hear, or feel everything I was barely just a moment ago. In the next second I was watching the doctors preforming CPR on me. I had no clue what was going on. nor why I was watching myself die, but I knew that this was the end of the line. I bowed my head and closed my eyes, saying a silent prayer for my family before I felt myself being pulled into the ceiling.

Once I had passed through I noticed there was nothing for miles around. Everything was completely dark, I couldn't even see the ghost hand in front of my ghost face. For a few minutes I wondered what was going to happen to me, but that question wasn't left unanswered for long. Two doors appeared in front of me and opened to reveal different scenes. On the left was the operating room, time frozen with the doctors trying to save me. I looked through the door on my right and saw grassy fields greener than I had ever seen. Trees holding large red apples. And the sky was a pure blue, not a single bit of pollution. I glanced between the two doors and thought about it for a moment, pondering which choice to make. Hesitantly I stepped through the door. There was a bright flash of light, I could feel slicing at my skin but I was unable to scream. My lungs felt like they had been lit on fire, almost like I was breathing in smoldering ashes. When I tried to open my eyes but had to close them again, the light was blinding me to the point of a massive migraine. My finger twitched slightly and searing pain erupted through my entire body once again. It felt like my bones had been replaced with hot metal rods. Then there was nothing once again. I opened my eyes to take in my surroundings and immediately regretted my decision. I screamed out as loud as my lungs would allow, hoping someone would save me, or put me out of my misery. I clenched my eyes shut and braced for impact. Something hard hit me in the chest, making all the breath leave my lungs. I cringed as I coughed up a little blood and attempted to scream again, only managing a squeak.
