It occurred to me that maybe there's more to the hatedom generally directed at Blueblood than him being kindof self-centered or ticking off Rarity, he fits a certain role.

When writing a fic, I prefer using as many characters from the show as seems appropriate, and there's almost always somepony that fits the bill of what I need for any given scene. Something crazy/silly going on? Pinkie. Need a band of mean-but-not-heartless bullies? The three pegasai who heckled Rainbow in Sonic Rainboom will probably work. Reality-warping shenanigans are almost always Discord playing a prank. Need an extremely arrogant snobby sort? How many characters have been introduced that really work for that so far...?

Pretty much just him. There's Jet Set and Upper Crust, but they didn't really seem to have the spine to do things like go around picking on "lesser" ponies openly or be absurdly racist and such. Those two are mitigated by their desire to climb the social ladder, Blueblood, if he were a prick, would have no such restraints. For the epitome of stuck-up ponies, he seems like the perfect fit to use as part of another pony's story, doesn't he?

I noticed this when, in one of the stories not nearly finished yet, I needed to make an OC for a smarmy, greedy, posturing little high-society dirtball because the prince was occupied with another role in the story, but I know if circumstances were very different, I'd have used Blueblood in that spot right away.

So, I don't think it's just hate for the only male member of the royal family, at least not all the time, just that, who better to use for that kind of thing, right? :derpyderp1:

Thoughts? :trixieshiftright:

They just assume Rarity is in the right and he is in the wrong because she is a protagonist.
When really she was just being a shallow bitch that only wanted to be with him for what he could give her and had everything he did to her coming.

I don't think it's that. Or not quite that.

I think it's not "I need a character who is a snob" but "I need a character who is already hated". Using Blueblood is the easy way, compared to establishing a completely new character to fill your antagonist role. Just use Blueblood and slap on whatever flaws you need. Racist? Okay. Violent? Why not. Evil? That's almost a given.
The author banks on preexisting emotions regarding the character.

I'm sure there are a few that think that way, yes, but it can't be the only reason. I hope? :derpyderp2:

That makes a lot of sense too, come to think of it. The same reasoning might apply for the choice of antagonist(s), if applicable, of almost any given Ponyvillian-foal-based story.

I agree with both Derpsby and MetaKnight, and I lean on MetaKnight's on this thing. Protagonist-Centered Morality is the trope.

Well, I can give you my reasons why I originally used to hate Blueblood (but don't any more).

It was spring of the year 2011. I had just begun watching two really great new shows that inspire me until today: My Little Pony and Game of Thrones. Both had a girl who was good at making dresses and was dreaming of a white knight fall for a blonde jerk prince and act stupid because of it. Of course I realize in retrospect that it was unfair, but at that time my mind simply short-circuited Blueblood with King Joffrey (well, still Prince Joffrey back then). And of course, Rarity stood up to Blueblood very quickly while Sansa wasn't able to do the same with Joffrey. (Incidentally, Rarity was a character I quickly came to like very much even though I was sceptical at first, while I only slowly came to like Sansa much later, during season 3 and 4 of Game of Thrones, but that's probably beside the point.)

Another point is that while I have nothing against the desire to be "classy", I find classism absolutely off-putting (which is probably not too surprising for a revolutionary socialist like me). Blueblood crossed this line in a way Rarity never did.

That said, I've come to enjoy quite a few fan works that manage to give Blueblood some character.
